It is hoped Fliss Johnson's presence will help all the children taking part in both finals get more involved in the game of golf and realise just how exciting golf can be for all ages. Golf is a great form of exercise which helps improve agility, balance and control, and as this competition has shown in the qualifiers, perfect for both teenagers and young people.
Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said:
'I am a huge supporter of TriGolf and Golf Xtreme. These are two variations of the sport I have been firmly advocating since taking on my new role. If we want to have a healthier population in years to come then we need to have these innovative activities for our children and young people and hopefully this competition will encourage them to take up the sport and help the game flourish. To have sporting champions like Fliss Johnson taking an interest in the development of young golfers, who knows they could still be playing in 50 years time.'
Both events are the culmination and celebration of months of small golf competitions involving over 50 schools from throughout Birmingham. Working in partnership with School Sport Partnerships, the Birmingham Competition Manager's team and Birmingham's Golf Link service and the Golf Foundation, a charity championing the development of junior golf, have generously helped fund the events.
20 schools in total qualified, with all being offered golf pro coaching throughout their progress in the aim of helping boost their chances in producing an entertaining final for both rival competitors and supporters.
Fliss Johnson, 3rd in the SAS Ladies Masters in Norway at the weekend and now 35th in this years' order of merit ranking, said of the upcoming event:
'The junior development work here in my own home the city of Birmingham is brilliant. Golf Routes work in school and the wider community will hopefully inspire golfers of the future to enjoy the game for years to come.'
The competition is also a testament of how well the cross-service partnership within the council has worked. Councillor Les Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said:
'This is an opportunity to help get children out and about. Sport is crucial to a child?s well being and hopefully this competition will encourage just a few to go out and try golf.'
