A stunning trophy, always filled with beautiful flowers on the day, was the prize along with the opportunity to overcome two Counties against whom our competitive history goes back a very long way! The Mary Turner Bowl is an 'end of season' competition between Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire & Herefordshire. Many years ago Professionals would pair up with 1st team players but more recently it sees eight 1st team players paired with eight 2nd team players.
They compete in a better-ball medal competition with ALL eight medal scores to count! One could say it is almost as bad as our own Team Championships but at least there are two options on each hole! It is always very difficult to assess how the team is doing until the final cards are returned unless, of course, you have someone who is very quick on a calculator!
Two of the Warwickshire pairs were placed in the top 3, all of whom carded scores of 68, and won vouchers for their efforts. Par for the course by the way is 74. Lisa Barton & Di McCormick came third on count back and Rachel Rusted & Hannah Crump took first spot. They sandwiched a Staffordshire pairing and congratulations to all of them.
Beyond that Warwickshire had one score of level par and all others were under par. So perhaps it was not surprising that we had the best aggregate score of all cards. Our total score was 571, 5 points ahead of Staffordshire who came second.
I was delighted to accept the trophy on behalf of the team, all of whom had worked hard on the course and were thrilled that another piece of silverware has come into Warwickshire's hands this year.
My thanks to my girls for playing and yet another great 'team effort' from Warwickshire.
