The finals of the Midlands South Girls Match-play competition were held at Temple GC, Berkshire on 4th October. The teams of 6 playing off scratch were Oxfordshire & Worcestershire/Herefordshire. The handicap teams of three were Oxfordshire & Warwickshire. We were treated to magnificent views in pleasant playing conditions with some exciting golf. Four of the scratch matches went to the 18th with Worcestershire & Herefordshire winning through.
The Warwickshire team was headed off by Hannah Pearl Wood (10), followed by Katrina Gani (10) & Gia Rhodes (12). Hannah Pearl was giving 8 shots and had an up and down match, at one time pulling back a three shot deficit. Her match was dormie 2 down but she took the match to the 18th to finish 1 down. Katrina Gani was giving 12 shots. She had a 2 shot lead going into the back nine but her opponent fought back so Katrina finished 1 down. Gia Rhodes, also giving 12 shots, knew she had a hard battle when she lost the first hole to a gross birdie when giving a shot. She was three down at the turn but could not pull back and finished 4 & 3 down.
A hard day for the team, but it showed the strength of the junior squad as players, just outside the scratch team, are playing off such low handicaps. They showed great fighting spirit.
