Shirley Golf Club was the venue for the 2009 Mary Turner Bowl competition, an annual event between Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Worcester/Herefordshire. The first rain seen for weeks started the day, but fortunately only slight drizzle was experienced by these stalwart golfers during play.
An excellent end of season match this, with eight pairs from each County playing against each other in a better ball, medal format. Great excitement as the cards came in to be checked as it looked like Warwickshire was in a winning position. However, as often happens in golf, the last card in had a fantastic score and Warwickshire were pipped in the Team event by 1 shot by Staffordshire!
Individual Pairs prizes were won by:
1st - Corinne Tooth (6) and Julie Heath (9) - Nett 64, from Staffordshire
2nd - Tracy Atkin (2) and Bobbie Waugh (9) - Nett 67 (on Back 9), from Warwickshire and
3rd - Sam Birks (1) and Bridget Locke (11) - Nett 67, from Staffordshire.
The whole match was played in great spirit and everyone sat down for an excellent lunch after play. A disappointed Warwickshire Captain, Bev Belcher said "If only I had not missed that putt!! - however we look forward to competing again next year when Staffordshire are the hosts at Whittington Golf Club"
