The semi finals of the Warwickshire Ladies County Golf Association (WLCGA) Inter-Club League were in August at Olton Golf Club where Stratford on Avon Golf Club beat The Warwickshire Golf Club to go through to the Final; and at Kenilworth Golf Club where Shirley Golf Club beat Maxstoke Park Golf Club.

It was a daunting task for the 14 golfers (handicaps ranging from 9 to 22) driving off from the first tee down the tight tree lined first fairway at The Welcombe in front of an army of caddies, plus the referee for the day, Jane Dennick of Leamington & County Golf Club, together with County officials Angela Dawson (President) and Dottie Beanland (County Captain). It is no wonder that players were a little on edge!

The ladies from Stratford have not yet managed to win this prestigious competition since it's inception in 1977, so were determined to play well for a victory in the glorious autumn sunshine. Shirley had their name on the Winners Salver in 2007 and were equally as determined to repeat their winning performance again this year.

All matches were extremely hard fought and none tighter than the match between Joy Trinder of Stratford and Carol O'Hare of Shirley with Carol clinching her own match and the Team match with a 1 up win on the 18th hole.

Maybe it was down to confidence after recently winning the Daisy Harthill Cup at the Inter-County Team Championships which gave Shirley the edge to beat the strong Stratford on Avon team.

The match was followed by a lunch and formal prize giving. County Captain Dottie Beanland commented that both teams had fought very hard to get to the final and congratulations were due to both teams for winning through. She was pleased that the matches were closely contested and played in a particularly friendly spirit. Dottie also said that she hoped that everyone had enjoyed this special day. The course was presented in such good condition and the hospitality excellent, even at 8 in the morning! Finally Dottie thanked Dan Hacker, Director of Golf PGA at Menzies Welcombe Hotel Spa and Golf Club for again giving the WLCGA courtesy of this fine venue and added that the annual support from Menzies Welcombe is extremely valuable to the County.

Kay Garman, Ladies' Captain of Stratford on Avon Golf Club was presented with the Beryl Turner Runners Up Salver by County President Angela Dawson. Val King, Ladies' Captain of Shirley Golf Club was delighted to accept the League Winner's salver on behalf of her team.
