Up at West Lancashire GC, Rob Steele made the headlines (on a national level) after Round 1 of the Brabazon by shooting a 66 – 8 under the CSS for a course which played very tough all week. That score gave Rob the first round lead but he could not keep his game at that level and finished on 297.

Chris Evans was the other Warwickshire player to make it through to the final 36 of this 72 hole Championship. He did so with rounds of 74 and 71 and added 146 to that score for 291 – very respectable.

The Stag is notoriously hard to win, played on the fabulous Beau Desert course which has been the venue for numerous Open Championship pre-qualifying rounds. The Stag was held on Saturday 15th My and Rob opened with a 70, including a hole in one at the 3rd.

Rob held his nerve and shot a second round of 73 – a total of 143 – and a one shot win. This achievement will surely be a major contender for Bonus points for the JoM for May – well done Rob.

All three of these players will feature in the field for the 2004 Warwickshire Amateur – for the starting sheet CLICK HERE
