In foursomes, the pair is only as good as both players and it was Bromley who played his approaches from the fairways whilst Foster had the odd tree to negotiate, and both fully acknowledge they depend on each other for what is an impressive pairs record in the Midland League. Had they not beaten County Captain Louis Meryon (heavily) early on in this year's Bainbridge, they might have a chance at first team golf....
Harborne birdied the tough 2nd to take an early lead in the final, dropping behind when they made mistakes at the 7th and 8th before grabbing a hole back with another three at the 9th.
A Hearsall fairway miss at the 11th put Harborne back to just one down before Bromley and Foster responded with a birdie at the 14th then another at the tough 16th. With a Harborne mistake at the 17th, it was four down at lunch, Hearsall round in 70 to a 74 from the Birmingham Club.
It was a series of mid shorter putts missed that prevented Harborne from getting back into the match, not three foot and under misses but attempts from five to eight feet after long approach putts just didn't quite go close enough. There were the odd Hearsall mistakes but each time Harborne followed with one of their own.
When Hearsall flew the 12th green and ended up in the boundary hedge, a classy pitch from Harborne made it four down with six to play. They hit what looked a fine tee shot at the 13th only for it to skip through to the back of the green. Hearsall replied by pitching their tee shot on the front of the green and see it roll to four feet from where they holed the winning putt.
The final was played in glorious sunshine over a superb Copt Heath, with only a bitter cold winter indicating the arrival of winter soon. Hearsall played their closest match, in the semis, back in the late summer when they beat the pair of Juniors who were representing Walmley Golf Club in Rob Holland and Sam Teather. They went ahead in a tight match with wins at the 12th and 13th before winning 3&2
It could have been an all Hearsall Final (again) bar Harborne beating Hearsall B in the semis. Their closest match was against Stratford where the brothers birdied their home clubs fearsome 18th to beat Stratford.
The winter County foursomes has already started - the Warwickshire Cup. Hearsall may well be a team to beat as they posses three excellent pairings. Can they do the double?
