'When we have played together, you can count on the fingers of one hand', said Smith of the win record he has had with Westwood.
'But he's (County Captain Louis Meryon) split us up recently', interjected his partner, 'Do you think winning this and two weeks ago the Finney Shield that we will be back together?'
That Finney Shield win was in the company of Clifford & Dyson, and Coventry's Rob Browning and his partner and if there was a match of the whole draw it was when Clifford and Dyson beat Browning and Sam Dodds, both plus handicappers -
'We were under par bar the 15th where they won with a 7 against our 8', laughed Dyson, 'Sam hit it OOB on the 16th then they birdie 17 to get that back but they miss the 18th fairway by miles.'
'They couldn't get it back over the trees', added Clifford.
Westwood and Smith played 'youth' in the quarters and semi finals. Firstly they disposed of Olton's big hitting pairing of 2009 JOM Champion Michael Pell and George Hayes. Then they added the scalps of Rob Holland and Sam Teather from Walmley, with more under par golf.
The final was good golf but mistakes were crucial and Clifford and Dyson bogied the first to immediately go one down. They lost the 8th to Westwood & Smith birdie and then could not par the long par three 11th or the next. When they made a hash of the 16th, they were five down and needed an immediate response and they duly provided that with a two at the 17th. The 18th was halved.
The finalists swapped bogies early on in the second eighteen before Westwood & Smith birdied the 24th to stretch their lead. Two mistakes on the 27th and 28th and The final was all but over and with two pars on the next two holes the huge 104 year old trophy returned to Handsworth for the first time in 13 years - in the hands of Karl Smith and Dave Westwood.
