U16s - Leicestershire take revenge

Sunday 25th June 2006 - Ingon Manor GC This report comes just 24 hours after the success of our Men's team in qualifying for the 006 County Championship finals. Playing today for Warwickshire, under the guidance of Dick Ferry and Antony Gascoigne, were players who in 8-10 years could be the golfers who represent, and win, for Warwickshire at the highest level. The result, against the County Warwickshire beat by six shots yesterday, was a narrow in for the visitors.

The full match results are given below. At lunch, the match was all square after two wins for each County and two halved matches. In the first foursomes match, Andrew Geraghty and Daniel Higgs, were two up with three to play but could not convert this advantage into a win. Daniel went on to take a singles point.

Having been unbeaten for over a year (more than 16 matches), that record had to go at some time and Andrew Geraghty lost on the last to a Leics birdie, with Andrew having to mount a big fight back to go that close to keep his record going.

For each point that the visitors took, Warwickshire responded. The best golf came from Sam Jamieson with four birdies and an eagle and from a Leics player at no 12 who was taking on the youngest Warwickshire team member Daanyal Spalding. Nathan Ray, second youngest, took a foursomes point but he too could not overcome his opposition despite lots of pars.

Daanyal and Nathan will soon be firing in red numbers to beat players. At the top of the order, Callum McDonald had four birdies in winning 4&2, Lewis Fathers and Sam Teather three each in their wins.

Our other point came from the gritty half gained by Michael McCormick.

Warwickshire were missing a few of their best players so the result of a loss by 8.5-9.5 was not unexpected when playing one of the strongest Midland Counties - as per the results in the Champion County qualifier.
