For the new blood of our county game, the U15s, hosted by North Warwickshire every year, is the first Championship title they can win. Scoring has always been good and this year was no different. For Sant, and Runner Up Tom Price, the 6th (a good par 5) was in range with 7 irons, a good guide to how far these young players hit the ball. Sant actually went down a club, to an 8, in the afternoon nine holes, probably sensing that with victory so close, he would be a bit more pumped up. That shot, like the morning one, resulted in a two putt birdie. He also made four at the 4th, another par five and with only one dropped shot, his closing 35 was the same score as that from price and victory was assured.
Price, from Coventry Hearsall, made three birdies in the afternoon to go with a pair of red figures from the morning. One birdie came at the fourth, to go with a double bogie there earlier, just a few mistakes too many to challenge Sant.
That was a stupid bogey , said Price after his round.
With Steve Mumford having a poor day, Leigh Pritchard who will join the other three in the England Schools U16s at Maxstoke on August 18th, took third place. Best Girl was Lauren Wayte, with Runner Up Abbey Gittings.
What was startling about Jack Sants rounds were that over the day, he hit 24 out of 27 greens. North Warwickshire had kept their greens longer than usual because of the heat, so holing lots of putts was not really a possibility. What he didn t doo was three putt, only making one bad mistake when a bunkered tee shot at the very difficult 7th resulted in a triple bogey to spoil what was an excellent morning round.
I have another year playing in this , said Jack, and no one has ever won this twice. It would be good to come back next year and shoot a really low score ... and win. I ll give it a go!
Its probably not advisable to bet against this young man doing so, especially as he already has a handicap of 4.
