The other opening match was between hosts Staffordshire and last year's Champions Worcestershire - and it went 5-3 to Staffordshire.
Wednesday morning saw Gloucestershire beat Worcestershire (so the Pears were not going to do a 'double') and Staffordshire taking on our new team.
We accumulated early points through Captain Nathan Ray with his first point of the tournament, Michael Pell adding another win, then two halves from George Allen and Daanyal Spalding. When Adam Lumley had the biggest Warwickshire win of the round we were guaranteed a half but Staffordshire fought back and only Robert Owens made the last green where he lost 2 down.
It was all to play for. Staffordshire held a half point advantage on the overall scoring so if they beat Gloucestershire, Warwickshire would have to beat Worcestershire by more. Or, if Gloucestershire won, our team would need to do the same.
The signs were good, then average, for most of the first nine. Robert had been feeling unwell from the start of the day but he insisted on playing on (no reserves are allowed) and he turned one up. Nathan was never a long way down but a hook from the 13th and he looked in trouble. Michael was well up then dragged back to all square, only to birdie the next two and on the 13th, avoid a tree that would cost Worcestershire in match after match.
Max was down but his fellow youngest team member Daanyal was 'hovering' around 1up and level. The best news from Louie and from George, but well up.
George soon converted his game to a point and our next win came from Nathan who after being one down with three to play won on the 18th, soon followed to that green by Michael who also won 1up.
The half was guaranteed by Adam, who won on the 17th. So could we win?
Our team produced exactly 100 birdies over their three matches. They made 39 in what would be an afternoon win 7-1 against our biggest annual rivals - so of course we won as Daanyal won at the last , Louie took his match on the 17th , the same place where Robert once again proved the adage 'beware a sick or injured golfer' is true. Max Martin threw two 30ft birdie putts (at 16 and 17) at his opposition to take his game to the 18th but could not leave us undefeated.
AS it was Gloucestershire continued their renaissance and halve with Staffs so any win was going to be enough.
It was a great start to the season. Hopefully there is more to come. Chairman of Junior Golf John Jewsbury and all the members of the Junior committee deserve much praise but the team did the winning and they showed the same spirit in doing so that their multiple champion predecessor had in bucket loads. It needs to grow.
