Our next two matches were Rob Browning and Chris Doogs (Dougill) followed by Fred Jewsbury & Ryan Wallace. And guess what - both would go to the last hole with 'better' results for us with both pairs coming away with a half point.
All that was needed now was Karl Smith and myself to play all 18 holes and yes that is what happened but we had the advantage of being 1up on after the 17th and with one more more good hole played we finished 2up.
So Warwickshire going into lunch 2-3 down could be seen as a positive going on previous matches - at least that was how I liked to look at it!
The singles was our 'march to victory' although the first two games went through the turn with our players well down.
Jamie played at No1 and was that focused on a win that he totally missed the claxon suspending play due to lightning. He actually came back from 4 down to get a superb win of 2&1 our first point of many, winning six of the last eight holes!
Sam also played through the bad weather having a very close match which went to the last for the second time and came away with a half.
Nine holes into the PM session and the heavens opened with thunder and lightning all around. It led to a quick conversation between Worcester captain and myself and off the course we went for a 30 minute break. This gave me a chance to get the updates from my team and we were looking good up in most but only by the odd one or two holes so things still could change ...
They did change but in our favour! Once we were back on the course the team didn't waste any time in taking full charge of the match - firstly Tom came in winning 3&1, then Elliott (1up), Doogs 2&1, and Rob (playing some excellent golf at No 6 for one game only) won 5&4 as did Fred.
Not to be outdone Ryan playing Worcester captain had a 6&4 win. It was Karl's turn next to add his 4&3 win. This left just me out on the course and when the two John's (present President and Past President John Stubbings) came hurtling up the 16th fairway in the buggy to ask how I was getting on, 'one up' was the reply and I could tell by the smiles that we had done well and was put out of my misery when I learned we had not lost a game and had already won the match.
All that was needed was for my game to finish, this did not take long as following a 60ft putt for eagle from my opponent and another heavy downpour it was decided to shake hands on the 16th and agree a halved match.
What a result thanks to all of the team for their fantastic performance,
Worcester had won their first two games and were/are looking to win the league so this shows they have a very good experienced team and this shows how good we can be to win the singles 9-1.
We need to move on now and win our final two matches against Shropshire & Hereford then Staffordshire this result shows we are more than capable of achieving this.
A word about our host Shirley - the course was in very good condition and a pleasure to play, the hospitality given to both teams were excellent as was the evening meal.
Thank you to our supporters who again turned up to encourage the team, Pete Clarke thanks for the arrangements made with Shirley.
Final thank you is to John Mayell who turned up to watch the matches and following our dinner John gave the team who have qualified for the county finals a 30 minute chat on what to expect when we get to Ganton. John has been to the finals six times as player and captain so has a lot of experience that he now has shared with us
Some tips were very simple but ones I would not have thought of so a big thank you John from the all of the team.
