An opening 74 put Andy the wrong side of the cut mark but playing in the afternoon on Day II, when the winds were getting up through the mountains where the Prosper Golf course is built, Andy roared up the leaderboard with seven birdies, his charge stopped with two holes to play by an evening storm.
Returning on the Saturday morning, Andy bogied the 17th and parred in for a 68. In R3, one of Andy's playing partner's was Thongchai Jaidee and for seventeen holes Andy kept a very respectable place on the leaderboard. He though 'doubled' the 18th for a 74.
Andy's final round was a 73, to leave him on 289 (+1). As a professional he would have won over Eu 8 000. he enjoyed the whole experience but was more than aware of what he did right - and wrong -
'My putting wasn't good enough - which is rare - 32,33,34 - just not good enough;, said Andy
'In the third round I gave away six shots through poor course management - I knew what I would have done as a professional, playing say 20ft wide of a hole and stuff, but I thought as an Amateur 'I'm just going to go for everything'.'
And what about the next two weeks?
'On the 3rd we go up to Scotland, not to Royal Aberdeen but to St Andrews, We head there for the 6th or the 7th, ready for that weekend.'
Many of you are going to watch the Walker Cup. If you can't make it, there is live coverage on the BBC so expect to hear Peter Allis utter something like -
'And this is our first look at Andrew Sullivan - he's our No 1 ranked player you know - he's a bit like a combination of Ian Woosnam and Arnold Palmer - gives it a hell of a swish .....'
