Olton had played all their matches at home and their progress to the final was not so difficult – when they played Nuneaton, it was against a weakened side. If they were to beat Coventry, then the first match was a key. Unfortunately, that meant taking on a pair who have lost very few times, Carl Kirby and David Hayes, 2002 Bainbridge Shield winners.
For Lavery and Alan Wormall, a finishing burst of birdies left the Olton pair facing up to a 4&3 loss and the news from behind them was not good.
Barnie Dowding and Louis Meryon were up against John Taylor and the 1st Team No 1, Matt Cryer, for Coventry. Their task was made all the more difficult because of 5 birdies from a pair who both made sure that they were available each round – Taylor returning from College and Cryer fitting matches into his busy schedule which has included playing for England in Mexico this Winter. A 4& 3 loss and the final was Coventry’s.
Even at Match 3, between the ‘veteran’ pair of Bill Nicolson and Peter Holt for Coventry and Stuart Birchley and Neil Moorcroft for Olton, there was no sign of anything for Olton as they found themselves dormie three down, only to be offered a half by Nicolson as the Final was all but over.
Peter Holt was 54 today and he is very much relishing Senior golf whilst still contributing to Coventry success when asked.
‘I am going to be after John Mayell (Midland Seniors Champion in his first year in O55s golf) next year’, said Holt, with his usual winning cigar in hand just before the presentations.
‘We have six, maybe seven, Captains’, said Nicolson as he waited to received the Warwickshire Cup from Blair Fotheringham. Golf Operation Manager for the Warwickshsire.
‘You have to get everyone to play – an foursomes is a very difficult game – but we have played well all the way through.’
‘It was a good win away at Ladbrook, who have a very strong team, but up until the final we have won every match 3-0. Last year we lost away in the 1st round, on winter greens. It’s a Winter competition and things like that can happen – Copt heath lost early this year. It very nice to win it though this year and good that the team performed to all expectations – thanks guys!’
