The advantage went to Coventry in the morning when they were round in an approximate 67 strokes to be 6 up. Cryer and Hayes were actually five up after nine holes courtesy of a flying start with birdies at the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th.

They kept that advantage until lunch, adding another hole with one of the two birdies they made on the back nine. The afternoon was much tougher as Browning and Stafford pegged the Coventy pair back with some under par golf themselves. When the match finished on the 14th, Coventry were –4 for those 14 holes.

‘We were delighted with how we played’ said the holder of three Warwickshire Union Trophies in 2004, Matt Cryer.

They were nearly not finalists though as against Atherstone, the regaultion 18 holes were all square andn it need another birdie at the 19th for Coventry to go through.

There was also some spectacular scoring earlier on in the competition when Hayes and Cryer were –8 after 11 holes.
