Losing the morning foursomes 4-1 was not the start Clifford would have wanted from any team. David Miller and Charlie Staite played well and were only +1 when they lost 2&1 in a terrific game at Match 1. Two ex Juniors in Chris Leonard and Adam Gassor were in Match 2 and they met a team playing very well – and were trounced 7&6. Matches 3& 4 went to Leicestershire both by the score of 2&1 before our solitary point was put on the scoreboard by Neville Gardner and Peter Clarke.

The singles started well although Chris Staite soon found himself well down. Richard Cresswell was three up at the 8th only for a thinned Leicestershire chip (which was very successful) to start a comeback from their player which resulted in Cresswell losing on the 18th, ruing a couple of three putts.

Around the turn, Warwickshire were up or square in many matches. Pete Clarke could not repeat his point from the morning whilst Nuneaton member Steven Frearson, another recent graduate from Junior ranks, could not use his home course knowledge for a win.

Chris Leonard was up after the 8th then lost four holes round the turn and that would be another loss but the first singles point for our County was already on the board courtesy of Charlie Staite with a 4&3 win with Staite at least -1 when he won.

Neville Gardner saw his opponent in trouble on a number of occasions, only for some spectacular recoveries from trees and ditches. That would be another loss on the 18th. The rest of the singles results were good news.

Firstly Captain Nick Clifford got up and down from bunkers at the 16th (for birdie) and at the 17th (for a par and then made another four at the par five 18th after a spectacular and very difficult shot from behind a tree at the green.

Next came a point from ‘veteran’ (not yet a Senior though) Nuneaton member David Miller who has played in this team for a number of years. David was -1 on his afternoon round, on a day which saw Nuneaton playing at full length after the rains of the previous week and with a strong wind making the par four 9th all but unreachable for anyone playing – Clifford found the front edge with a driver and his best 2 iron though.

The final singles point came from Coventry golfer Adam Gassor. Adam was one down with three to play and calmly slotted home from 7ft at the last to win his match.

The start of the Midland League is two months away with much preparation to do if the stated target of trying to win both Midland Leagues is to be contested. From the standards of play for this friendly, our team must have strength throughout and those selected be playing at their best. The last Midland League Match of 2004, against Worcs, showed what can be done when we won by over 10 points on that day.

The 1st team were away, under the Captaincy of Gareth Jenkins, who is proposed as County Captain for 2007. Gareth started very well with a win away against Leicestershire.

Both teams were missing some of their very best players. After the morning foursomes, Warwickshire held a 1 point lead and with early losses in the singles, bar a win for Andy Sullivan against an EGU squad player, the match was looking like going to ‘The Foxes’. However, Warwickshire won each of the last four singles to record an 8.5 to 6.5 win. Firstly Sam Foster won comfortably, then Mark Davis birdie the last for his triumph. Louis Meryon provided the point which gave us the win overall and Ben Stafford topped that of with a 1up scoreline.

The Warwickshire Team was – Gareth Jenkins (Capt), Paul Randle, Andy Sullivan, Andy Colley, Adam Gray, Mark Davis, Louis Meryon, John Taylor, Sam Foster and Ben Stafford.
