Fota Island

Host venue for the 2001 and the 2003 Irish Open, chances are you will remember much of the course through the extensive coverage over those two years. Remodelled from an intial Peter McEvoy design for the Irish Open the course now has a Tour Championship course built over mature rolling parkland. Its an impressive club and visitors are welcome every day to try to finish with a flourish at the 18th with is almost island green, not the only hole where water definately comes into play. The bunkering is excellent throughout, much better than the resort style shallow traps that are more the norm in redesigns.

Fota Island has everything you would expect of a Tour course - a beauitfully appointed clubhouse with Spike bar, and extensive restaurant and changing facilities. You can hire a buggy if you so require and the practice facilities are top notch. Its a sister property to Mount Juliet which is to host this year's American Express World Championship event.

Fernhill Golf and Country Club

Fernhill is nine years old and maturing very well, a very affordable course to play and is accompanied by a its own Hotel and Country Club, all within a few minutes drive of Cork. At just over 6300 yards, Par 69, the 3rd hole is a feature on the front nine with a drive where a player can cut off as much off the carry over a quarry as they feel able to.

The approach and drive to 11 is probably the most difficult part of the back nine and with two par fives its a chance to make a score. When you have finished, you can enjoy a drink or two in the clubhouse bar and restaurant or enjoy the pool and sauna, or for the more enegertic, the Country Club has a tennis court.

Green fees start from around 20E or you can stay at the hotel and have a free round each day. I

f you want to consider the hotel in the Low Season price are between 50-65E per person for sharing a twin

In the High Season (May - Sept) prices per person are from 55-75E

All rates include bed, full irish breakfast, 1 round of golf per day and use of swimming pool, sauna & tennis court. There are special rates for groups depending on numbers and availability.

Outside of Cork City region

Bandon Golf Club

On the road towards Clonakilty, you pass through the beautiful town of Bandon and if you turn right and head up towards (and past) Bandon Hall you come to the town's golf club, set either side of the lane and overlooking a picturesque valley. There are three new holes just opened which have the Hall as a backdrop. The rest of the course is very mature parkland (golf was first played in Bandon in 1905) just over 6200 yards par 70 and a course which has been awarded for its work on wildlife conservation. Well worth a visit.

Lisselan Estate Golf Course.

The Honourable Company of Lisselan Golfes have some course. Its only six holes (at present) one with three tees to make up a complete 18, its laid out alongside a noted arboretum so (especially in the Summer) it is picturesque to rank with the best and all this is in an unspoilt part of the Kerry Countryside.

Lisselan is an undiscovered little gem with very affordable green fees and a course which has two ourstandingly beautiful holes (which you will play three times at different yardages) - the other 4 (and those to come) are not so bad either!
