The visiting father and daughter duo saw off the challenge of the mother and son pairing, both members at Burhill, by 3&2 in a thrilling final of the foursomes matchplay competition after winning three holes in a row in the latter stages.

The three-day festival tournament, now in its 74th year having first been held in 1937, is one of Burhill's most popular and longest established on its annual calendar.

This year it attracted 45 pairs, including 37 non-member duos from around the southern home counties and even one couple from France - Paul Masters and Kareen Howe, who so enjoyed playing in a previous competition they took a holiday in England to coincide with this year's event.

While the Dordogne-based father and daughter were competing in their second Family Foursomes, Juliet Morgan (West Sussex Golf Club) is now a veteran of more than 50 events. Juliet was introduced to the event when she played with her late father in 1953 and this year teed off with her son, Andrew.

To win the tournament, eventual champions Gerard and Laura O'Connor (Worplesdon Golf Club) had to battle through six knock-out rounds. In the semi-finals they overcame Sarah Knollys and Hugo Wright (Sunningdale Golf Club) by 3&1 while Sally and Tom Parrish defeated Pauline and Rory Toogood (Ashridge Golf Club) by 4&3.

Harry Bathurst (Hankley Common Golf Club), one of two competing youngsters aged just 11, performed exceptionally well with his mother Jane to reach the quarter-finals.

The tournament was held over the challenging and scenic 6,940-yard, par-72 New Course - host to this year's Europro Tour and Senior Open Championship qualifying events - at Burhill, part of Burhill Golf and Leisure, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator.

As a precursor to the main tournament, 38 pairs crossed swords for the annual Langmead Morgan Trophy, with Sally and Tom Parrish gaining consolation for their eventual defeat in the Family Foursomes final by securing victory. The trophy, first played for in 2003, was donated by Juliet Morgan to mark the 50th anniversary of her first outing in the Family Foursomes.

Pip Elson, Director of Golf at Burhill Golf Club, said: 'The Family Foursomes is one of the leading events on our calendar and we once again enjoyed a successful tournament despite the sometimes poor weather. Well done to our visitors, Gerard and Laura O?Connor, for playing superbly well to defeat Sally and Tom Parrish, our own members and defending champions, in the final.

'It was also fantastic to see Juliet Morgan, one of the tournament's most loyal supporters, play once again with her son, Andrew - long may she be teeing up here at Burhill!'

David Cook, General Manager at Burhill Golf Club, commented: 'We were pleased to welcome so many visiting couples to Burhill Golf Club for another successful tournament, and we invite them back to enjoy some more golf and hospitality in next year's Family Foursomes - if not sooner.'
