At Olton, 3 handicapper Rob took a few 'point ones' off his handicap with a pair of 71s (+2 each round) to make a three way play-off for their Junior Open title. His fellow combatants were Patrick Skakel (2009 Schools Champion) and Olton's own Michael Pell.
The play-off was first over three holes, like the format used at the Open. Rob bogied the 1st but went back to level with a birdie at the 3rd. Michael made six on the 2nd to drop out whilst Patrick was all pars, only to lose on the first of the sudden-death holes, the 4th.
Over at Coventry Hearsall, Tom was playing in their Junior Club Championship. On a perfect summer's morning (yes, there has been one) Tom was playing perfect golf and by the 16th he was seven under par, and had a six footer to go -8 with then the opportunity to make one more birdie to beat Liam Mallin's course record.
The birdie on the 16th didn't materialise and although disappointed with missing out on the record, Tom was more than chuffed with the -5 to CSS his 63 gave him to go into the Daily Telegraph, a score which may well take him to Abu Dhabi for the final of the Telegraph's Junior Championship later this year.
'I though I'd follow up with say a 75, you know how you do', said Tom,'but I kept playing really well.'
Really well meant a 64 and with 0.9 off his handicap, Tom is now off +1.
It was a tied pair of finalists who went to the 1st at Walmley this morning and Tom played some steady golf to be 4 up after nine, taking the advantage of a few Holland mistakes.
Rob and Tom birdied both of the early par fives on the back nine at Walmley. To give himself some sort of chance, Rob took the other par five, the 16th, with a birdie.
'I thought - you can't write yourself off - but you have to pull something out of the bag', said Rob of his lunchtime chat to himself, 'I told myself I had to hit more greens and I had to hit it closer.'
'I played those first nine of the afternoon in second gear - I only made four pars,' added Tom.
The key hole was the 8th, when a pushed Ibbertson drive was thought to have landed in a huge puddle, a remanent of all the rain from this week. Tom searched with his hands in the muddy water for the full five minutes, only to be trudging back to the tee when his ball was found 10 yards further on - out of time though.
A visit to the trees on the 9th by Tom and Rob was ahead.
'I won a hole, I lost a hole', said Rob, 'I took the 13th and 14th with birdies to be two up and then both had birdies on the 16th.'
When they halved the 17th, it was all over and Ron had his first Warwickshire title.
'He's been close a few times - he deserved this win', said Tom
As it was, Rob staggered home to pack for this weekend, playing for his club in the Junior Club team Championship at Burghley Park. It was a quick turnaround and Rob spent the evening asleep in the car. For Tom, it was preparing for next week's British Boys where he will tee it up alongside Jamie Carney - he will go to Kent tomorrow afternoon, to walk the course later on then practice on Sunday on the fearsome Royal St Georges Links.
They will leave behind proud club members (in Birmingham & Coventry), non more so than at Walmley where a second matchplay championship in a row is a fair reward for their efforts in developing their Junior Sections.
