His second round saw him open with a birdie but two bogeys followed before he eagled the fifth for a second time to go -1 for that round and the Championship. Abirdie at the 10th was countered by a bogey at the 16th before one final red number at his 36th - for a 71 and a total of 144, to be four back from winner Chris Lloyd.

In the Juniors version, after eight holes of round one Tom Ibbertson was leading the field at -4. He opened with three consecutive birdies, and narrowly missed from inside 10 foot on 5, 6 and 7 followed by a birdie 2 on 8.

But then.... on the par 5 9th he hit his drive down the right just missing the fairway. His playing partner hooked left into the heather, but the ball was spotted by the spotter. The Cheshire lad proceeded to reload and hit his provisional down the right finishing on the fairway, just short of Toms ball.

Tom laid up short of the heavily guarded green, but as he was about to play his chip he hesitated, and realised the ball at his feet wasn't his, it was the provisional ball played by the Cheshire lad.

Not very happy, Tom returned to his own ball played on under two shot penalty, and racked up a triple bogey 8.

Despite hanging onto pars on the next three holes the incident had got to Tom, and further triples came on 13 and 15, and a double up the last gave him a 6 over 79.

So from a position of 4 under through 8, and an excellent chance of taking that to 5 on 9, he dropped 11 shots on the final 10, but did muster one more birdie.

A round of -2, combined with his -1 second round, would have put him on the winners rostrum, a score that has well within his grasp before disaster struck!!

Still, he came out of the weekend in a creditable 7th place out of 33, having found himself 19th after round one, and reduced his handicap by 0.7 to +1.2.

Tom is also one of only 12 players who have qualified for the Abu Dhabi Daily Telegraph Junior Championship finals to be held in late November and we wish him good luck and his best golf for this most prestigious championships

Another Warwickshire team will be travelling to sunnier climes - the Stoneleigh Deer Park team that includes Nev Gardner, Shaun Young & Will Smith within their 5-man team has qualified for the Mail on Sunday finals in Spain also in November.
