Sam Dodds & Rob Browning Beat Matt Larvin & Ryan Wallace 1 Hole
David Hayes & Andy Carman Beat Dave Westwood & Karl Smith 2/1
Richard Oddy & Nick Jenkins Beat Nick Clifford & Steve Dyson 4/3
After 2 holes the third match was 2 down but after that they got into gear & played the next 13 holes in 3 under par to prevail 4/3. With the top two matches being close to get this early win was very important.
Match 2 appeared to be in Coventry's hands being 3 up at the turn, but a couple of 3 putts & a Handsworth birdie, meant they were hauled back to one up with three to play.
Meanwhile the top match Coventry were two down early & struggled to get back on level terms until a birdie on the 15th drew them level. An immaculate par on the very long 463 yard 16th hole into what was now a strong wind put them one up, which is how it remained after a half in par on the 17th.
Match 2 however also made a great par on the long 16th with David Hayes chipping from five yards off the green to two feet from the hole. Andy Carman obliged by holing the par putt to win the hole & go two up with two to play.
With the top match on the 18th however David & Andy closed out their match by halving the 17th to win 2/1.
To compete the result a half in par on the long 18th par five saw the top match home & an excellent win for the Coventry team.
Handsworth had the match of the cup (before the final) when they beat holders The Warwickshire at home in the Quarters, a win without a point from their most experienced pair Dave Westwood (Cat) and Karl Smith. It was new Warwickshire Boys Captain Ryan Wallace and his then partner Danny Higgs who took Handsworth to a semi-final away to Copt Heath, and there had the biggest win on the day by 8&6 for an overall result of 2.5 to 0.5.
In the final itself, Westwood and Smith (current 1st team players for the County) faced two players who have played for the Firsts and won numerous points for the Bears in the past. Dave arrived at the Warwickshire knowing he had a back problem and it took lots of warming-up for Dave to make it to the first tee where he could only try to make the fairways.
That pair only lost by 2&1 but it would have been a pairing Handsworth would have expected good things from.
Winning captain Peter Holt said -
'My thanks go to the whole team that played together with Jon Pascoe & Bill Nicolson who helped the team along with myself when when other team members were not available.
'In the five matches played only one individual game was lost showing the strong team effort given throughout the competition.'
'Our thanks also go to Handsworth who are to be congratulated on reaching the Final & making us fight to the last. Also to The Warwickshire who put up this trophy 11 years ago & have hosted the Final every year', said Coventry Captain Peter Holt, 'Here's hoping we can be there again next year.'
