First out in the foursomes and starting the day with a win were Andy & Rob coming back with some very good golf after being 2 down through 9 to win 2&1 Next out were Fred & Chris pairing up for the first time they ran into an inform pair who started with two birdies and by Chris's own admission he was not on form so this game quickly went to the Leicester pairing
I had the luxury of partnering 'the new Doogs' who proved his statement in Spain correct that he was a new man dedicated and focused on golf, Doogs played a solid game, even when going from 4 up then losing three on the bounce from 10 to 12, we then had our turn and won the next two and eventually ran out of holes to a 3&2 win.
Anthony Gascoigne & Karl Smith lost 2&1 all down to some missed putts and their opponents ability to get up and down on several occasions Gaining the point that gave us the advantage over lunch was Stranksy & Oddy this game finished 2up following a solid performance from this experienced and hard to beat pairing.
The morning session finished 3 to 2 in our favour, so onto the afternoon singles.
Andy played well but came across the in form Number One (David Gibson) for Leicester losing a close game 1 down. Rob again proved himself to be difficult to beat fighting all the way to a halved game.
Third out was Fred wanting to reverse his morning defeat but again came across some very good golf - I have no further comment to add about this game as Fred chose the Alex Fergusson approach and declined the post game interview, with a 'final whistle' showing a 2&1 loss.
The 'new Doogs' continued his good form of the morning playing under par golf, Doogs moved quickly ahead through some quality golf finishing early with a 5&4 win. A couple of good up & downs was the difference in my game resulting in a 3&2 win and another point for the team.
Rich had a cracking game that was close all of the 18 holes, with Richard holing a very good putt on 17 to go to the last 1up, being supported by our President who was very impressed with the standard of this match both players found the green on the difficult closing par 3, with Rich needing just the half he made a solid putt that stayed above ground and was quickly conceded, this left his opponent needing to hole out from around 15 feet. Unfortunately he did just that rolling the ball into the middle of the cup for a halved game.
From the look on both faces I got the impression that this was a fair result due to the high standard of golf from both sides.
Next out was Stranksy playing the Leicestershire captain. Ian said the difference with this game was the lack of putts that dropped for him and the amount Phil holed, that said Ian made a great fight back with birdies on 16 & 17 to take this match to the last.
Ian hit a good shot to 25 feet putting pressure on to the captain, he was up to the task with a shot onto the fringe leaving a putt of around 35 feet, when his putt ran a good 4 foot past Ian rolled his putt to side of the hole and this was conceded, with the early season greens the putt left was no certainty but as he had done all the way around the opposing captain calmly rammed it into the hole for a 1up win.
We were now down to the last three groups who all came up with the goods that secured our victory. A very experienced Gascoigne had 5 birdies giving him a comfortable 3&2 win. Then came one of the best come backs you could get with Chris turning around a heavy defeat in the morning going out and shooting under par to record a 4&2 win.
Last but not least was Karl put out at number 10 to use his experience should the games go all the way to the end, Karl went from 1 down to 5 up winning 6 on the bounce and when the final putt was holed Karl was a 5&4 winner.
Final result was 9 to 6 in our favour, well done to the team and thank you for making my debut a vice captain most enjoyable.
