Tom Ibbertson is though a class player and as one of two of a plus handicap in the field, some sort of charge was sure to put pressure on the 10 players ahead of him.
Set a target of 68, Tom was five under par only to drop two in his closing holes. The resulting 69 though set a new clubhouse target of 143 which seemed better and better as the afternoon went on.
Then though Tom was joined on that score by last year's Runner-up Kieren Foster from Leicestershire and mmoments later, a 144 was posted by Harry Riley. It meant a play-off and having won the Warwickshire Schools thus, Tom did so again to take himself through to the English Schools in three weeks time, at John O'Gaunt Golf Club.
There he will lead a Midland team which includes his brother Harry, who added a 73 to his 74. There was though no place this year for Michael Pell, who had three double bogies in his last four, and for Patrick Skakel, there was a similar finish so he too missed out.
Our 'wildcard' George Allen would have needed to shoot 70 (after an opening 80) and for much of his second round, something like sub par was 'on'. He will have two more years though and all the Warwickshire Boys were from Solihull College, so would the team trophy be ours once more?
Riley's second round led a charge from Shropshire & Hereford for the team title. its wasn't enough and we took that title as well.
Good luck to Tom and Harry!
