Could our lads, average age 12?, emulate our men and become Midland Team Champions?
Could they just!
By lunchtime our boys had achieved a lead of 12 strokes, with a 5 man score of 297. Every one of the 6 had played under their handicaps, with all our counting scores 61 or better, Elliott leading with 58 (having hit 4 greens in 0reg - a big hitter who can chip and putt - what more do you want!) and Stefan and Max also below the magic 60.
As the afternoon drew on, however, a rising wind and an indifferent start from 3 of our lads, brought the worry beads out from the pockets of the large band of supporters. Scores deteriorated rapidly with only Stefan and Elliott holding the fort and the 11 year old Josh hanging in there manfully.
In the end, however, worry was unnecessary, all produced unspectacular but reasonable scores and when the adjudicators had done their worst, it emerged that, not only had we done enough, but our afternoon score was equal best at 309!
A massive winning margin of 19 shots!
It is a measure of this performance that, if Warwickshire had been forced to drop the best score in each round instead of the worst we should still have won by 6!
Say it again ? THESE BOYS ARE GOOD!
The best overall individual score of the day was by Stefan Gnyla with 117, Elliott Garside was joint 3rd with 119. Of the 120 rounds played, only 15 scored under 60.
Special thanks go to Ryan James, 6 handicap from Nuneaton, who travelled and supported, to cover in case an injury to Elliott had not healed sufficiently. He had played a practice round the day before and scored 58 - not bad for the reserve! Special thanks and congratulations also to a delighted Dick Ferry, who worked so hard to put this team together.
