The former have shown their ability throughout the season with a County Match Play crown and a Four Counties Victory, however the latter, have amassed so many points in County Matches over the years that combined they would have earned their County Colours 12 times over!

The teams in question were; representing Kenilworth, Rob Owens and Elliot Forbes and representing The Warwickshire, Gareth Jenkins and Ian Stranks. I'll let you come to your own conclusion on which team is which.

The venue for the final was Olton Golf Club which interestingly, for the historians amongst you, from the inception of the Bainbridge Shield in 1906, Olton Golf Club were crowned champions six times in the first seven years. Thanks to all at Olton Golf Club for allowing the use of the course and their facilities, the course was in fantastic condition, particularly the greens which would be the envy of many.

The match itself saw the young and talented team from Kenilworth of Elliot Forbes and Rob Owens get off to a flier which, despite a double bogey at the 6th hole, left them 2 over par after 10 holes which was good enough to take them into an early 4up lead.

However, the experienced pair of Gareth and Ian fought back valiantly with a 2 pars and 2 birdies bringing the match back to all square after 14. Par golf and a further birdie on the closing holes of the first round gave The Warwickshire pair a rather impressive 3 under back nine and a 1 up advantage at lunch.

Even at lunch it was noticeable that the preparation and approach to the game from both teams was very different. As one team dived into a full plate of curry, rice and chips and the other nibbled on a tuna sandwich. Any way, apologies for the digression, back to the golf?

The Warwickshire pair started as they left off with a par, birdie, birdie start which quickly took them into a 3 up lead, however the Kenilworth pairing were proving their metal and ground out an equally impressive run of 5 pars and 2 birdies, bringing the match back to level after the 10th hole.

Unfortunately though, just when they didn?t need them, Kenilworth recorded a couple of bogies on the 11th and 12th leaving the duo 2 down. However, all was not lost with a fantastic birdie on the tricky short 13th hole giving The Warwickshire pair something to think about and back to 1 down with 5 to play.

At the next hole a wayward drive from the Kenilworth pair opened the door to the Warwickshire team who stepped right through making a solid par and returned to 2 up. Both teams paring the 15th meant the drive on the 16th was crucial.

The Warwickshire team took full advantage of teeing off first and split the fairway where as Kenilworth left their drive out to the right making it hard to recover from. The Warwickshire pitched their second shot close enough for the hole to be conceded and win the title 3 and 2.

We will never know if the combined benefits of experience and a large curry and chips for lunch was the secret ingredient but we do know that in foursomes with a gross score of 7 under par for the last 27 holes, you will never be far away from the prizes!

Very well played and many congratulations go to Gareth and Ian who displayed a solid display of golf. I also have a distinct impression we're going to be seeing a lot of Mr Forbes and Mr Owens in the years to come.

Thank you again to Olton Golf Club.
