Our interview with new 1st team Captain Andy Kearns

What would be your first words for players who could represent the County this year?

Welcome to 2004. It should be a great year of golf ahead.

We have an exciting depth of talent - from players like Matt Cryer through the five guys who are in the US on Scholarships.

We have 16 players who are off scratch or better and you can add just about the same number of players who are 2 or lower - as captain, I don t expect to be playing this season. I m not good enough and I want to make sure the management is really good.

What have you been planning over this Winter, for the coming season?

We have a good crop of young talent coming through, who are benefiting from the coaching that the Union provides for the junior squads. On top of that, there has been lots of work over the Winter to formulate our new strategy, Team Warwickshire.

We want to compete at Local, regional and National level - our goals are to win the Midland Leagues (at both 1st and 2nds) and we want to qualify for the County 6s.

Our focus has been on coaching through the Winter, recently on the short game and mental side of things. The first £100 of tuition can be paid for by the Union and we want to see more players using this. They can only benefit from more help.

Do you want players to use the GSA system?

We now have it, so lets use it! We just don t know how players are doing from week to week, who is playing well, winning competitions. Its really up to the players to tell us and GSA does that.

I am looking for teams based on a formula - the players who are technically good, the players who are mentally strong and those who have a really good attitude to playing in a team. If you want to be in our teams, you need to show your playing abilities, that you are very competitive and that you want to be part of a team.

GSA will give you a unique access number so that you can do lots of things on-line. For County prospects, it includes being able to keep an on-line handicap profile which is available for the County to check on how your golf is going. A GSA number can do lots more than this and your Club should be setting up how it validates your GSA number in the coming few days. To apply - click on the link below and follow the simple instructions. It may take a short period of time for your club to fully access the GSA system but everything is done quickly and efficiently by e-mail.
