Paul started his round very positively, an iron into the right half of the 1st leaving him the best line in. He might have had a bit of adrenalin on his approach as it was half a club too long, ending up in the fringe from where he two putted.

The second was much the same story before he played a raking long iron to the fringes of the par five 3rd then chipped and putted for a four to join Eduardo Romero in the lead at –12.

The next, he missed the fairway by inches but chopped out to 25ft and two putted and on the 5th, his playing partner Barry Lane made his first move, hitting it to 4ft (which he holed). Broadie was 15ft left with his tee shot, ending up in a hollow from where the Atherstone golfer played an immaculate chip to save par.

He was not playing badly, and his approach to the 6th summed up the start of his round, slightly pushed and just half a club out leaving another fringe approach. Paul would then push his next three drives, on the 7th, 9th and 10th. The result was par, a bogey and a miss from 14ft.

The 7th was crucial, with Paul having to wedge in whilst Barry Lane had found the back edge from where he chipped in to open up a two shot lead on the field. With another birdie at the 12th, to Paul’s 6, it looked Tournament over as far as Paul winning was concerned, and money possibilities were going down by the moment with five other players all tied at –12 and –11.

Paul came back with a birdie at the 13th, only to drop another shot at the next. His four at the 17th gave him a round of 72 and a share of 5th.

‘I just didn’t hit it close enough. On a couple of holes I was just into the rough and that means going for the middle of the greens, not the flags.

‘Barry played awesome – I tried my hardest, maybe too hard, especially on the putting (today).

‘When I bogied the 12th I thought with 13 and 14 coming up, two fives and I would be back in the pack. It was just a couple of drives – 9 was bad, 10 I caught the tree and 11 and 14 I was just off the fairways – I am not quite happy with the shape but its coming – yes I am happy – maybe not he wife though, she’s not smiling1’

Well done Paul from all at www.warksgolf.co.uk and all the people who remember you from your amateur days.
