‘I felt more pressure on the last six yesterday. It was very relaxed from the off today and I wasn’t thinking about winning. I never looked at a scoreboard once although I knew something was going on from the crowd reaction on 17 and 18.’
This was Scott’s first win from his 27th start on the Tour. He only got into the Championship a week before when as 4th reserve he was assured of a place when Greg Owen pulled out.
‘I surprised myself today. I wasn’t on the best of form coming here. On the putting green this afternoon I missed more than I have all week. Going into the back nine I expected to feel more nerves and pressure.’
Scott missed 7 out of 8 cuts before the 2004 Volvo PGA. His previous biggest cheque was £14 000 from a win on the Challenge Tour.
‘This is a reward for all the work I have done in the past 18 months with my psychologist Jeff Pettitt. He is a sports psychologist as is my caddy Kevin. Kevin actually found that I was 500-1 at the Bookies and he said he was going to place a bet on me – I said that I would like to bet as well. Kevin could only place £10 each way.’
Scott was the first rookie to win on the European Tour for a year, he joins Anders Hansen (2002) as the only players to make the Volvo PGA their first victory AND he joins a certain Arnold Palmer as the only ever winners of the PGA on their debut!
‘I was England Boys Captain and I used to play foursomes with Steve Webster. We both went to Tour School in 1996 where he won … and I didn’t make it. I played the Hippo for three years then made it onto the Challenge Tour in 2000. In 2001 I was just outside the Top 15. Its very expensive to play the Challenge Tour and he has supported me throughout – I don’t know how.
‘His name is George and he is 70. On the 18th he said to me I had made his life – he has lived for me to get my Tour card – it has always been my dream. Dad has enjoyed a bit of travel this year. He came out to Dubai.’
Scott has qualified directly into the Open at Troon and has a place in the World Invitiational, the NEC Championship. He is now very much in the running for the Rookie of the Year.
‘Last time I was at Troon I was playing in final qualifying at Irvine and I needed a four at the last. I took six and I was gutted – I took driver and hit it in the rubbish.’
What of others – some more quotes –
Nick Faldo – ‘That’s a first for a long time. I always keep my stats on how many chance I give myself. Normally its been half a dozen most of the time this year and that was probably a dozen – that was a good run.’
Darren Clarke – ‘I finished poorly. If you look at the way I played 17 and 18, I wasted chances.’
Joakim Haeggman – ‘Its just fantastic to be back. Just after I holed that at the last I looked at the board and said ‘well done’, you can’t say much.’
