| 'I was more 'excited' last year', said Pat after our 2005 County Champion Tracy Atkin had sealed the win witha third triumph in the singles, 'I am more nervous this year - there is more pressure this year. Throughout the week we didn't want to put ourselves under pressure and in some fantastic matches the team came through!'
The morning had started with some short-lived embarrassment for Claire Dowling who had putted hers and her partner Atkin's ball off the 18th green to lose their match. When each of the following matches did the same, there were nervous laughs at how difficult some of the pin positions were on the McKenzie greens of the course.
That loss was the only one in the morning's play. Fliss Johnson and Lisa Barton completed a hat-trick of wins and it was an excellent 4&2 performance from Claire Howells and Jane Mander.
This meant that even a loss in the overall match and unless things went very badly, we would still make it through to Copt Heath for the Midland region semi-final on 18th-20th July. The half would do but the players all wanted to win all three of the team matches.
Fliss was out at No 1 and with some big drives (one over 320 yards) she was heading for home well up. The same was true for Tracy, especially after she had holed for a 2 from behind the 8th green. Neither would post the winning point though as fresh from a lesson with Fliss and Marsha Button on Monday morning, Claire D was continuing her rejuvenation.
Claire D also holed from off the back of the 8th, this time not to turn the singles match in her favour but to put her opposition under some ridiculous pressure (6 down!). As players and supporters gathered at the 15th green (where Fliss and Tracy both eventually won their matches) Claire D strolled up having only played 25 out of 36 holes in the past two days.
The other three Warwickshire players out on the course were all still trying so hard, even with the match won. All the remaining singles went ot the 18th but with no Warwickshire wins though - Overall match score 5-4.
At Copt Heath, we will be without Fliss who has been selected for the Vagliano Trophy, a Ryder Cup style match against the Continent of Europe and GB & Ireland. That will mean that the squad will be used in full, with Hannah Coles and Bev Belcher both not playing this week, plus with the possible addition of another player to a team which is so positive and proud.
'Its great to be going to Copt Heath - its the Warwickshire 'home of golf'', said Pat, 'I am proud and excited (now)!'
