Warwickshire Schools 2003
With rain promised for lunchtime, competitors in the 2003 Schools should have had plenty of time to complete their rounds. Those first off had almost a dry round but for many, the early arrival of damp conditions pushed a fair few to higher scores. It was the players who were striking the ball well who managed to keep playing well, notably Lucy Powell whose nett 65 was good enough for the Wales Trophy for the best Net, by just one shot from James Parker-Cooper and Russell Heritage. Whilst Lucy celebrated her trophy win in her last year of Junior golf (she is 18 very soon), this was also the last year for defending (and three time) champion Felicity Johnson.

Felicity s last Warwickshire Schools round was probably her best. It could have been better though as she said afterwards.

I was above the hole on the 5th and four putted and I had another 3 putt - its a good round to show me what I can do in the Warwickshire County Championship though

The three putt was on the par five 18th, for a par and if Felicity had managed to hole for an eagle, she would have had a 69 (-4). An eagle at 18 would have been her second of the round, her score made by a fantastic run from the 13th. On the short par 3, Felicity had a 2 and followed that with another birdie on the 14th, then another 2 on the longer par three 15th. 50 yards short of the 16th, the Hillcrest golfer then holed her pitch for an eagle!

The draw put Felicity out with two boys - Its better playing with golfers of my own standard - I was up with them off the tee - and she was the third best gross score over the day, another fantastic performance and one which will take her to the Midland Schools Championship for one final time, and hopeful to the England Schools as well. Both titles are possible, especially if Felicity continues to play well ..... and improve.

She will leave the title open to a number of ever improving girls who will chase home Hannah Coles, For Hannah, it wasn t a good day but her 85 was good enough to give her runner-up position for 2003. At her best, Hannah could match all that Felicity has achieved. She will be looking for more consistency.
