| Both Browning and Gascoigne were very tired as they started out on the 36 holes of the Warwickshire Matchplay final. They had played 72 holes in the previous two days, each beating two players on Friday to make the final and then having 36 holes of the Maxstoke GC Club Championship on the Saturday, in which Gascoigne was Runner-up to Ben Stafford, holder of the Boys and U21s Matchplay title.
Gascoigne went 1up with a birdie at the 3rd hole and the trend to low scoring continued with a half in 2s on the 5th. The 7th was the turning point.
Both players had pulled their tee shots left at this first par five. Gascoigne knocked his approach short of the green then pitched close, only to see browning, after and adventurous approach with a five iron hole his chip for an eagle.
That was two up to Browning. It became three when Antony took a five at the 9th but the next was halved in birdie threes and Gascoigne pulled one back with a pr at the 11th, a dangerous par three.
Browning then 'caught fire' for the next four holes. He birdied the two par fives, then hit huge drives at the next two par fours and was able to chip close for four birdies in a row and a six up lead.
A Browning mistake on 17 and the lunchtime score was 5 down for Gascoigne and perhaps a loss of heart because of how tired he was. When Rob opened up the afternoon holes with a 3 at the 19th, Gascoigne made mistakes at the next two holes to be 8 down. He did manage to grab a couple of holes back but when Rob found the 12th green in two and Anton missed it to the left, and failed to hole his chip, it was two putts for the title which Rob duly took.
'To think he won with my putter', said Gascoigne at the presentations, having leant Rob the instrument which was responsible for much of the younger player's success.
'With Antony having been so ill over the past two years, its great to see him playing so well', said Warwickshire President Jim Dean at the presentation.
It was left to Rob to thank all those who had played a part in his success, notably missing out on his father who had caddied for him for the final!
