| The field included the likes of Maxwell Martin and Daanyal Spalding who still have years to go before they reach double digit age, through to the best of the U15s in Warwickshire in the likes of Geraghty, and pre Championship favorite Robert Bardsley.
Bardsley had been a member of North Warwickshire and was the lowest handicap playing but his putting (36 in the first 18), let him down and he would finish fifth.
Robert's new Home Club of Moor Hall would do well on the day with three in the final Top 10 but the Club of the Day was Shirley.
Shirley are one of a number of clubs who have big, active and successful Juniors sections, much of the results coming from the hard work of the organisers (as at any club) such as Dean Guy. Mr Guy had the added parental pride of seeing his son Thomas take third place today, Thomas pipping his fellow Shirley member Sam Newey for the place with a third nine of 37 (+1).
The Shirley success continued in the tussle for the Championship as the youngest of their players, Jamie Carney, matched Thomas Guy's 37 for the final nine holes to go with an opening 77 for 114. Jamie has reduced his handicap from 9 to 6 this year and shot his best round just a few days before the U15s with a 74 to come second in the Shirley Junior Club Championship, having already managed a very creditable fourth place in the men's event!
That 114 would be one shot too many as Geraghty birdied the par five 6th twice, reaching the green in two, and on the 4th, a longer three shotter, Andrew made eagle with a chip in from 60 yards.
Having won the Warwickshire Schools U16s in March, this was the 'double' courtesy of form which has seen Andrew halve his handicap in the last five months (to 4) and which last week produced Andrew's best round of his life (so far) - a 71 to win the Walmley Junior Open.
Geraghty joins the list of winners which not only includes the Tour players already mentioned, but also the names of Andrew Sullivan and Jack Sant, the last two winners of the U15s who are both playing in the British Boys this week and are through to the second round, Sullivan courtesy of a thumping 6&5 win against Spanish opposition. A number of players from today are already starting out on looking for National honors by playing the Reid Trophy ( The English U14s) this week, down near Bristol.
