Its a loss vs Yorks but Warwickshire can still win.
D2 - County Chamionships - Having lost the morning foursomes 0-3 against pre County Championships favourites Yorkshire, there was very little hope of actually taking the overall match, such is the depth of the 'Roses' county with many England players in their squad. The overall win did not happen but Warwickshire managed to take the singles 3.5 - 2.5 to still be very much in with a chance of taking the English title.

Yorkshire officials talked of how 'up' and ready their players were in the morning. They were never down as our players could not match their consistency, or when presented with opportunities to take a hole, did not do so. With having lost to Essex, the Yorkshire Juniors had to win this match to have any chance of being part of the deciding day, which they now are. But any hopes of a really big win were dashed by the fantastic golf from our team.

Firstly Andy Sullivan was up against Daniel Willet, and England Boy regular. Willet had his chances early on but a mistake from the Yorkshire No 1 followed by Sullivan birdies and even when Willet holed from off the 13th green and then chipped stone dead at the next, he could not get back into the match losing on the 17th.

Neil Taylor would have needed his best golf from Day 1 to beat Sam Haywood. It wasn't there and Neil lost 5&4, including one hole where his opponent holed his approach on the fly (without touching the hole).

Match 3 of the afternoon and Rob Browning started with his 'best ball striking ever'. Two up at the 10th, Rob hit one poor shot and when he hit it left with his approach to the par five 12th, the match was all square. Rob had a flyer over the green to the 16th and found the front bunker on the 17th trying to escape the bushes from his tee shot - the point to Yorkshire and a guarantee of their not losing the overall match.

Match 4 saw some scintillating golf from both players, Jack Sant for our side and Evans from Yorkshire. Jack was round in an approximate 66 with and outward half of 31 and it was only a birdie from 25ft on the 16th, when outside his opponent, that saw Jack go ahead. He took the 18th with a par when his opposition could not hold the green with his approach.

That left two more points available and the possibility of Warwickshire only losing 5-4, with the scoreboard showing a great Gloucestershire performance at the start of the singles (against Essex), it looked as if the four teams could each have one win going into the final day.

Chris Doughill finally got ahead in his match at the 17th. He hit a three wood and just missed the 18th fairway on the right hand side, the perfect line to approach the tight front pin. Unfortunately he had a horrendous flyer with his 8 iron approach and was left with a 70ft approach putt back down the very gentle but all too difficult slope. That approach putt raced 12ft by and Chris could not hole the return so that match was halved.

If Andy Evan's opponent did not know what he was up against when they started their match, he did when Andy hit a driver and then a 9 iron to 3ft at the 503 yards 3rd. This match was close all the way, with Andy losing the 12th to a birdie, then hitting back with one of his own at the 14th and winning the 15th with a conceded par to be two up.

Andy then had a horrible lie just off the fairway on the 16th and came up short in the front bunker and when he attacked the 17th pin, which was way back on the green, he was just a couple of feet too long and could not get up and down from off the back of the green.

Andy did though hit his second to 20ft at the last and two putts was good enough for a 1 hole win.

Our team has it all to do, and must beat Essex by at least 6-3 tomorrow as the team from the south-east stopped the Gloucs comeback and were eventual winners by a clear 4 points. The quality of the golf is there and with our best play, we can do it so do come along to watch if you can.

Warwickshire are in the second set of matches, starting at 8.30 for the foursomes and 13.48 for the singles.
