Juniors News - Sullivan is Champion of Champions
At Kirby Muxloe GC, on Sunday 11th September, Andy Sullivan took his last major Junior Championship by winning the Midland Junior Champions Tournament - with some incredible scoring. Andy, together with all the rest of our very successful 2005 Junior Team, will play possibly their last match this Saturday - and for many it will be a final taste of Junior Golf.

After 12 holes of the morning round in the Champion of Champions tournament, Andy was five under par and seeming to be in complete control of the day. He then dropped four shots in the next six holes -

'I just hit a couple of poor shots, and they cost me big time', said Andy who after lunch could only manage eight straight pars and a birdie in his first nine holes to be at -3 for the day and a few shots back.

Andy had shot a 69 in that first round, one back from Miles Frost (Staffs) but the challenge was now coming from the Notts Junior Champion, Richard Smith. In response, Andy fired five birdies and four pars on his final nine holes for a 65, a total of 134 and a two shot win from Smith.

It was 12 birdies on the day, and over the past two weeks in competitive play (including the Junior County Finals), Andy has averaged just over 6 birdies a round, with just the odd mistake that will soon not be part of his game if he is becomes a member of the new EGU U21s squad for which he has been put forward and will go to Woodhall Spa for assessment at the end of this month.

The last Junior Match was scheduled to have been played on the same day, against Derbyshire at Walmley GC. It has been re-arranged for this coming Saturday, the 17th at the same Club but even a huge win will not be good enough for Warwickshire to go the Midland League Junior Finals for the third time in a row, to be played at Kibworth Springs in October.

Derbyshire were due to play Shropshire & Herefordshire last month but cancelled that match and their results through the season may not count at all - and with the heavy loss three weeks ago by our Juniors away against Shrops & Hereford, this could be the last Junior match for this year's team, and many of its present members including Sullivan.

We will have news of the Derbyshire match next weekend and of any developments which might take us through to the League Finals.
