| R2 and Cryer was up against Andrea Romero, the Italian No 1 ahead of new US Amateur Champion Eduardo Molinari on their ranking system. Romero is a past European Amateur Champion from four years ago, when he was only 16, and his putting was devastating -
'I was on for a 67 and lost 3&2.
'I think "Alright - OK - where do we go from here" to myself.
'The result just didn't reflect how I played. Its the luck of the draw in matchplay but from under 12ft, you just had to virtually give him the putt. He was unbelievable.
'I look around and I see people felling trees and chopping out of the deep stuff.
ýRomero went on to lose in the semi-finals to Gary Wolstenholme (who lost in the Final). Gary had to putt really well under pressure just to stay in the match and on the third extra hole there was one opportunity and he took it.'
Pre the long journey to Australia this Sunday, for a day's and half's acclimatization before the four rounds of the Federation Cup (The Australian Trials), Cryer spent a day at the Ping factory at Gainsborough as he was fitted for a change of clubs - and manufacturer.
'I've changed my irons to S59s', said Cryer, then jokingly he added, 'They are very popular on the Ladies Tour apparently so I thought they would suit me ...'
Cryer also has two new drivers and a set of fairway woods so that he can now pick and chose clubs for the variety of courses he has to play as one of England's Elite. Rob Steele has also been elevated a group, to the England 'A' squad, whilst Andy Sullivan is this weekend at Woodhall Spa as one of 25 players from whom a new U21s squad of 15 will be selected.
