| That came at the 15th, with Felicity out in a fair few under par and was one missed opportunity for a sub 70 round - it didn t spoil her 2002 as just about everything else would make even Mr Grumpy happy, and she still won that first County event of the year.
I wanted to get down to three and win the England U15 s - mission accomplished - Its been good fun and I ve played well all year - I am really pleased!
Really pleased includes another Warwickshire Schools, the Warwickshire Girls Championships, Home and away Internationals (Dublin and Germany) and the Warwickshire Ladies Amateur Championship. The latter was her first Senior Championship win and until March, Felicity didn t know if she was playing.
I asked Mum about time off school - she said yes
I want to go further, to find out more about this young superstar and her already documented decision to finish education next year and to play golf full time.
I was home for just seven days during the holidays and through May ... all the Summer I had time off for County Week, the County Championship, then the Sub Divisionals. My school was great. They helped me catch up each time but this is my last year
The direct question - Do you find school difficult? - the frank Felicity answer come with no hesitation-
No, I have good results (at school) but I don t enjoy it. I love playing golf and I want to be a Professional. If you are good enough, its great to get paid for doing something you really enjoy. How long before I think I could be good enough? At the moment it would be when I was 21 or 22, after a good amateur career, playing Curtis Cup and the other big Ladies Championships.
I ask Felicity to go back to that week in Blackpool, playing in the England U15 s at Nott End. The detail that goes into her reply is consistent with her previous answers and everything else she talks about during the hour.
Round 1 was Hannah Ralph (6&5) then Hannah Burke. That went to the 20th and I was up all the way until the 16th when she went 1up. I go that back then made a great up-and-down at the 20th to go through to play Rachel Jennings. That was a good match (Felicity won 3&1) and the final should have been more comfortable. I was 3 up with 4 to play when she made an eagle and on 17 she holed a long putt for a birdie and I followed her in to keep ahead - just!
Felicity was close to par in all four rounds there, and she managed two 3 under scores in strokeplay, one at the Prince of Wales trophy, the other at Pannal. In the Prince of Wales, it was a chance for Felicity to compare her game with girls much older then her whilst at Pannal , she came up against the best from Europe.
I was impressed with Elizabeth Bennett at the Prince of Wales. She has a Scholarship in the US. At Pannal, I played with Beatrice Recari, a past Spanish U16 s Champion. She had a better short game and was very attacking. She gave it a right belt as well, hitting it as hard as she could. Both were a bit longer than me but there is an age gap!
The confidence to know where to improve doesn t come with any negativity when Felicity is asked to step on to the tee in top level competition. She won 6 out of 6 matches at the Hermitage in the Home Internationals , her second major team event. The first was to Germany to play in the European Young Masters where England came 3rd and Felicity was 14th overall in a mixed team competition for two boys and two girls.
Taking on older Girls and Seniors is just part of the targets Felicity has set herself for 2003 and accomplished during 2002 where as Warwickshire County Champion she played her part in Warwickshire going through from the first stages to so narrowly missing out in the Sub divisional finals.
I want to get down to one and to win the U18 s. When I played in the Warwickshire Ladies there were no real frights. I wasn t keen on playing Claire (Dowling) but I got off to a steady start and it ended up OK.
Five is a number which occurs throughout her so far short career. She started playing at age 5, at Harborne Church Farm where her Granddad has been Treasurer for 50 years. Her first Ladies handicap was 23 when she was 11 and each year another five shots have disappeared as her dreams have been realised. Felicity was the first of a new batch of Warwickshire Girl s talent since the heady days of the late 80 s and early 90 s and she will benefit from all the competition she has at any level. Hannah Coles is hot on her heels as Warwickshire No2 Junior.
Hannah will be good - she gives it a good whack. Maybe she needs to work on her short game a bit ..... No I don t like it that she hits it past me. I haven t played with all of the other good Juniors but Sophie Walker is a good putter and chipper. Some girls pat it. I m quite aggressive although accuracy is more important. If you hit it a long way, you have to make the most of it and you can t do that from the trees.
I ask how Felicity is going to improve. Practice is 3 times a week during the Winter, going to the driving range with her father, Harborne Church Farm teaching professional Paul Johnson, there to keep an eye on things. She has already been to see a physio to improve her flexibility and will have a gym programme very soon for fitness. the specific part of her game for work now is from 80 yards in and she doesn t like playing without some swing thought to work on. Where does her inspiration come from?
The last few years its been Sergio (Garcia) ... and Nick Faldo and Greg Norman. My all time four-ball partners? That would be Sergio, Nick Faldo and Jack Niclaus ... and I was at the Ryder Cup!
Felicity was there, working. She marshalled at the 5th and 6th all three days and was being as observant then as she is any time she goes to a golf course.
That was a great week. The Europeans did very well - the US were shocked. It seemed like the Europeans had a buggy with every match helping the guys out.
Once the last groups had gone through each day, Felicity was free to go and watch. On that final day, the singles, she made her way to behind the 14th with its huge TV screen enabling spectators to keep up with the action. Then as the match came to a close, she rushed to the 18th where she shook Sergio s hand and he gave her his autograph (that hand hasn t been washed since!).
To close, I ask her about more general things - playing in the US, other personal targets, and top Ladies golf.
We did well at the start of the Curtis Cup but then blew it. I didn t get to see much of the Soldheim but that is where I want to be. I ve never been to the US. A few guys here (at Harborne Church Farm) have been and say its great. Maybe I could play competitively. I want to break 70, and by the time the next Ryder Cup comes round it would be great to be in the Junior Ryder Cup team.
I wouldn t bet against any of this happening, nor ringing for interviews every year as Felicity works her way up and up.
