THE SWING - Fitness analysis
I’ll be the first to admit that having only golfing experience on the driving range doesn’t qualify me to comment on the skills of the game. However from a fitness point of view any sport can be analysed to see what the main components of the movement are and which muscle groups are used. The most effective swing requires you to use your body as a whole unit coiling up like a tight spring, contorting into one of the most uncomfortable positions I think I’ve ever actually tried to get into and then release the power to end up the other way around ready to go again like a performance pendulum.

My Teacher - Julian Dodsworth from Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club

Moving to the top of the backswing, as demonstrated by Julian, is coiling a spring - the support you need to have is just as important as the coil .

You now have to transfer your weight to your right hand side and resist against the motion you are creating

You now extend yourself as you hit the ball - flexibility is a key

It was clear that from only a short session there are certain core muscles that need to work and not all are involved in large movements and not so obvious. There is a serious amount of rotation involved combined with fixing points of your body in specific positions and this requires a great deal of muscular condition to perform to a winning standard.
