Celtic Manor Wales Open - Day 1
Celtic Manor in Sunshine - it really does prove that the sun does shine on the righteous and in weather such this, Celtic Manor is beautiful and dramatic - previously only the nature of the weather has been theatrical like something out of a stormy Teutonic Opera. All they need now is a field worthy of all their efforts.

Monty is here, looking to prove favoritism has its finality with a first win for 2003. Together with Michael Campbell, they represent the highest ranked players in the field playing a course which isn’t as tough physically as some make it out be, staying in a Hotel which really is the equal of any, a venue with wonderful practice facilities and a £1.5M prize fund …. But its opposite the Memorial and acclimatising for the US Open has become the latest mantra.

65 from Nick O’Hearn and Ian Poulter

O’Hearn - ‘The key for me today was putting, simple as that. I one putted the first six greens which kinda helps. Its what I haven’t been doing really …..

I’ve got good memories of this place. You get a good feeling when you come back …

I’ve made every cut but I am not playing good golf … you go through theses patches ina season

Poulter - I haven’t been too well since I got here and it developed into tonsillitis. I weakened up on Wednesday morning before the Pro-Am and it felt like somebody had put two cricket balls down my mouth.

I had no expectations going out today … I went out there and didn’t really try hard at all, just tried to get round the golf course, nice and smooth …. I hit some great golf shots but I left some chances out there

I started to work with David in the five week gap after Dubai …. That looked like the perfect time. I wasn’t planning to do anything else so I thought to practice and try and change my swing in those five weeks, rather than wait for the Winter. Obviously the Ryder Cup is next year and hopefully being a more consistent golfer will put me in the picture for that.

Others high up the Leader Board - a 66 from Jonathan Lomas 67’s from Richard Green, Peter Fowler, Phillip Archer, Jarmo Sandelin and Alistair Forsyth

Monty - too close to the cut mark
