Winter returns to hit the Mens Trails
Sunday 9th April - Walmley GC - The Centenary Mens Trials was hit first by pea sized hail pebbles, then by thunder and lightning, and once play had been suspended (and then cancelled), ti snowed for the next hour. Only five players from the field finished 18 and then included an inspired Antony Gascoigne, at least for the back nine.

Gascoigne was two over for his first nine, in this gross stableford competition which was to be very important for County Captain Graham Hargreaves, in his an his Second Team Captain Nick Clifford, in choosing teams for the first two Midland League matches -

'These trial were going to be very important for myself and Nick. We are now going to have to look at how players perform in the County Championships, in late May, so I encourage everyone to make sure they play in the Amateur', said Hargreaves.

'It was a fantastic score from Gascoigne', continued Hargreaves, commenting on five birdies from the Maxstoke man, three in a row from the 12th and then more two consecutive red numbers on 16 and 17, '38 points off scratch was a likely winning score.'

As it was there were prizes given for the scores from players over nine holes, as nearly all managed to complete this number before play was suspended and then called off. Prizes, presented by County President John Stubbings, went to

1st - Antony Gascoigne (Maxstoke)

2nd - Sam Foster (Coventry Hearsall)

3rd - Ollie Foster (Rugby)

4th - Rory Kirwan (Kenilworth)

5th - Henry Einseidler (Stratford Oaks)

'Its was good to see Sam Foster, Ollie Foster and Rory Kirwan up there', said Hargreaves, having watched the 21 players he was particularly interested in play at least three holes each. He was not the only Warwickshire Union Executive out on the course as Junior Chairman John Jewsbury was also out on the course watching seven of the eight players who will defend the 4 Counties Trophy for a seventh time on the Saturday and Sunday after Easter. That team will be announced on this site on Thursday 13th April.

'I shall see some of the players at the Development Squad meeting on Monday', said Hargreaves, 'This will be the sixth such sessions which we hold every fortnight. I have just arranged the same for the 1st team, to be held at the Warwickshire.'

There was good news from the past two weeks for two of our top juniors. Jack Sant posted a 71 (-1) in his first medal at his home club Ladbrook. That was good enough for Jack to lose 0.4 from his handicap. He will miss the McEvoy though, having been balloted out in the record low cut-off for the first national Boys event for 2006. Jack is only 16 so he will be eligible for next year.

Last year's Warwickshire Schools U16s Champion was Andrew Geraghty. he is too old to defend that title but will be one of 63 Juniors in the field for the 2006 Schools Championships. The Schools was the start of a very successful 2005 for Andrew and he has started 2006 with two top placings in competitions and will play off 3 on Tuesday.
