Geraghty just gets better and better
Wawrwickshire Boys Trials 2006 - Stonebridge GC - 20th April - With a level par 70, Andrew Geraghty added another Warwickshire title to his Junior CV, his last win coming at the final Warwickshire Junior Championship of 2005, the U15s. It was more reward for his hard work this Spring and the low round of the day came via just 26 putts. Whilst Geraghty was consistent, his nearest pursuers just made a hatful of mistakes. This editorial also includes news of the McEvoy.

Ben Bernamont, one of six players in the field who will be going for a record sixth consecutive 4 Counties win this Sunday, for Warwickshire, had taken his 3 & 4 irons onto the Finham putting green the night before to practice a putting drill. He left them there when it got dark and so had to try to hit two 'soft' 2 irons to the two long par threes on the front nine at Stonebridge. Neither shot worked out as Bernamont would have wanted and both resulted in double bogey fives. A four birdie back nine gave the Coventry star a 72.

Sam Dodds is the other top Junior at Finham and he had a similarly disappointing start, turning in +5. Dodds (like Bernamont) was much better coming home in three under par for another 72.

Dodds was playing with James Smith, from Stratford GC. Smith walked onto the 14th tee at +2, looking for a couple of birdies on that hole and the 16th, both downwind par fives. He did not managed a four on either hole, and parred the rest, including missing from 8ft on the last. A third 72 to tie for third place overall.

John Banbury was the third member of the Dodds / Smith threesome and he was one over playing the 14th. He walked off that hole +2 after a six and with a birdie got himself back to +1, just one shot shy of Geraghty's total.

Steve Mumford and Daniel Baskott will be playing for Warwickshire this Sunday. They both posted 75s, along with Andrew Bate and Stephen Tomkinson (Olton). It wasn't such good news for Jack Sant who frittered away 9 shots on the front nine and posted an 82. Sant was though on terrific form the night before (in a Club Match) and will play a key role this Sunday.

Jamie Carney shot a 76 in the U14s. It wasn't his best round of the year so far as Jamie came second in the Faldo series event held just recently at the Forest of Arden - with a 77 round the Arden course played by the European Tour players. The best nett in this age group was a 79-13-66 from Jamie Slater (Wishaw).

In the 14-15 age group, Daniel Higgs produced a 75 in just his third Warwickshire event. Daniel isn't in the U16s team - yet! There was another good round for Jonathan Bryan (Shirley) to take best nett with another 66.

The 16-17 year olds saw Jamie Hancox take that best nett with a 69. CSS for the day was 70.

Prizes, including Centenary Plates, were presented by Warwickshire President John Stubbings and Stonebridge were thanked for their hospitality and help for their first ever Warwickshire Union event.

Also wandering the fairways, along with Warwickshire selectors, was a smiling Rory Kirwan. Rory had come straight over to Stonebridge after his final round in the 2006 McEvoy trophy, the 26th holding of this 72 hole Championship.

Rory made the 36 hole cut with a score of 147 (73 and 74). The other Warwickshire player entered was Chris Doughill, our Boys Captain. Unfortunately Chris followed his 73 in R1 with a 78 to miss out on the final 36.

After another 74, Rory then produced his best round of the week, a 69. It included four birdies and gave Rory a 20th= placing, the winner being Luke Goddard with a four round total of 278.
