| Unbeaten teams and special records create pressure on the players who come along in the years after winning runs have started. 'Team Warwickshire' employ a psychologist in Stewart Harris to try to provide the best in motivation for players to go out and perform at the highest level. He is just one part of a management team which our County has implemented to ensure that the conditions for continued, and even better success, is there.
Top coaches produce quality golfers and in beating all three other Counties, the eight Warwickshire players produced 78 birdies and 3 eagles. Three players could have beaten the Cleobury Mortimer course record had they been playing strokeplay rather than matchplay but historical pressures apart, in an individual match holing putts is a must and after a heavy individual loss in the second round of matches, Steve Mumford was in need of some confidence on the greens to go with his impressive ball striking
Mumford had a short session with Stewart Harris over lunch and proceeded to go out and putt his Staffs opponent off the course, establishing a big lead which the Hearsall Junior never relinquished.
Jack Sant was unbeaten in all his three matches. He won seven holes 'on the bounce' to post the first point of Sunday afternoon as Warwickshire looked to at least halve their match against Staffs to take the 4 Counties Trophy once again.
John Banbury had five birdies in eight holes as he ran out a 3&2 winner to take us very close to the winning margin. The other unbeaten (over the weekend) Warwickshire player was Ben Bernamont who had seven birdies to win on the last.
'We are all very proud of what is a great team, and a new team', said Junior team Manager John Simpson, 'We have a great Captain in Chris Doughill and it was a fantastic weekend.'
Chairman of Warwickshire Junior Golf John Jewsbury added his won praise to the management team - ' The Team manager got the team selection just right and its a tribute to our coaching program.'
The weekend started with a 5.5 2.5 win over Worcs, with only Schools Champion Rory Kirwan losing his singles. On Sunday morning Kirwan thumped his Gloucs opposition as one of three early wins. The match win (against a team Warwickshire beat in last year's County Finals and whom we narrowly overcame in the 2005 4 Counties when Warwickshire took the record of consecutive wins) was only sealed with Ben Ben Bernamont's 2&1 win in Match 7.
By beating Gloucs, our players knew that a half against Staffs on Sunday afternoon was all that was needed but none of the eight players were looking for anything other than a convincing win, which they achieved in some style by taking that overall match 6-2.
Sam Dodds took his individual score to 2.5 points from 3 with six birdies against Staffs. Dodds will be one of three players from this team who can try to go for a seventh win in 2007, along with Jack Sant and debutant Dan Baskott, along with the next crop of Warwickshire Juniors. One of those possible new team members had a gross 67 over the weekend and another won the 2006 Boys Trials. The quality looks to be there.
All this superb golf was played out in front of Centenary President John Stubbings and many of the Warwickshire Executive. The 2006 Tournament was hosted by Worcestershire and over a course designed by the instigator of this 4 Counties, the first in England and now in its 41st year. 2007 is sure to be even more special.
