Top seed Carole Caldwell in semi-finals of English Seniors' Championship
Top seed Carole Caldwell is safely through to the semi-finals of the Senior Ladies' English Close Championship at her home club, Sunningdale. The former Curtis Cup player now meets Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) while defending champion Chris Quinn (Hockley) takes on Sue Pickles (Lee on the Solent).

"I'm looking forward to it," said Carole. "I'm extremely pleased so far. It's not easy on your home course but I'm enjoying it."

She won a "ding-dong" battle in the first matchplay round when she beat Ruth Lindley (Hartlepool) 2/1. "There was nothing in it, we were one up, one down, all square - it was one of those, a very good match," said Carole.

In the quarter-final she staged a commanding performance against Carolyn Kirk (Ganton), winning 5/4.

The Sunningdale player got off to a quick start, winning four of the first six holes, and although she lost the long 11th to a birdie, she immediately struck back, winning the next two holes and halving the 14th to close out the match.

Defending champion Chris Quinn continued her bid for a third successive title when she beat Susan Ellis (Ferndown) 2/1 in the first round and followed up with a 3/2 win over Sue Westall (Copt Heath) in the quarter-final.

Christine Watson booked her place in the semi-final when she beat Geraldine Bray (Littlestone) 3/2. Sue Pickles won her quarter-final against Paula Parker (Abbotsley) by the same margin.

In Division B Wendy Bill (Ladbrook Park) upset the seeding when she dismissed top qualifier Elizabeth Clark (Effingham) 6/5 in the first round. Wendy went on to win her quarter-final against Christine Staff (West Surrey) 5/4.
