The Quinn Direct British Masters - Preview
The Quinn Direct British Masters is the start of the European Tour for many of the top players, some of whom have spent the Spring in the US playing a number of the minimum 15 PGA Tour events they need to hold playing privileges there, others taking time out after a golf schedule which now just stops for a couple of weeks over Christmas.

'I had a very busy end of the years (after winning the US Open and the HSBC World Matchplay)', said Michael Campbell, ' I decided to take a lot of time off and I have.'

Campbell has missed nearly as many cuts in the handful of events he has played this year as he did last, mirroring what happened in 2005 when he went on to play well in last year's British Masters and then go on to triumph at Pinehurst -

'I want to come out and do better this year - you want more, I do personally.

''Really the true season starts for us here on the European Tour. The guys like playing here (at the De Vere Belfry). Its an electric atmosphere and I hope to be part of it.'

Campbell will not be part of the European Team to take on the USA in the Ryder Cup this September. For those who are almost certain to qualify, playing at the Belfry does invoke the spirit of the Ryder Cup -

'This is definitely one from my childhood dreams, playing in the Ryder Cup? said Henrik Stenson, ? There are two parts; one is to qualify and the other is to do well when you play in Ireland.

?My main memories from 2001 (when Stenson won the old B&H) were the ninth and tenth in the last round. I made double on nine and then went for the green on the 10th and pitched in from the back of the green. My caddie tried to convince me not to go for it back then but it turned out to be the right thing to do. Its a tricky hole and I don?t think the trees are getting any shorter.'

For Ryder Cup hopeful Paul Broadhurst, defending an unbeaten record should he make it to the K Club, his play in the company of Ryder cup Captain Ian Woosnam in Italy last week has convinced the Atherstone star of one thing -

'I know one thing, I won't be one of his two picks.'

Paul McGinley is a West Ham fan and if, tee times permitting, he will try to get to Cardiff to see his team take on Liverpool having a helicopter booked to take himself and possibly Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn down to South Wales. The Irishman is not taking the tournament for granted though -

?This is a huge tournament, with lots of money at stake. I am in a good position to make the team, which I believe will be the strongest ever, with so many guys who are capable - but I came strong two years ago to make it.

'I have moved on since then. The way I played to win the Volvo Masters and the HSBC Wolrd Matchplay are proof of that.

'If I can make it to the FA Cup Final, it will be to support my team but its also because of the occasion. As a sportsman, you cannot get enough of that.'

Defending Champion Thomas Bjorn was born in 1972 so as he grew up, Liverpool were the team making all the headlines across Europe. He has stuck with the 'Reds' ever since, through the good times and the bad times and his recent recovery from another bout of illness has made the Dane very philosophical about both his defending the title and making the Ryder cup team -

'Spain (two weeks ago) was my first pain free week for some time. You are not going to win a tournament by what you did twelve months ago. I want this to be the start of a build up of form for the next three majors.

'I have found the right way to work on my game - I don?t work as hard but I get the benefits.

'There are 20 guys who can make the (Ryder Cup) Team. If I am not part of it then something has been missing from my game but if its not to be then its not to be. But I have no worries about European Golf.'

Its sure to be an exciting week so try to get to the Belfry or you can watch many of our prospective team for the 2006 Ryder Cup battling it out on the BBC.
