Max Power (in the singles) at Maxstoke
County Week 2006 - Stage 1 - Monday 5th June - Maxstoke Park. Warwickshire beat Worcestershire & Hereford Ladies 6-3 to give new County Captain Anne Parry a winning start in the quest for moving on the County Week semi-finals once again. There are two more matches to come over the next two days but this was the perfect first match - although things were not in our favour at lunch. This report also includes news on our opposition Staffordshire, for tomorrow morning.

Fliss Johnson seemed in fine form in both the singles and foursomes. Her partnership with Lisa Barton produced the only Warwickshire point of the morning, by the score of 7&6 against Karen Greenfield and Lesley Fox.

Was Anne worried when the other two matches went to Worcestershire & Hereford?

'It just swung to Worcestershire & Hereford at the end of the morning', said Anne, 'We were up in all the matches at one stage.'

The two losses were narrow - 2&1 and 1 down. For the afternoon Claire Dowling was rested and Anne introduced her new player -

'We came out all guns blazing', said Anne as her players won the first five of the singles. Notable was the first Warwickshire point from Kerry Evans, winning on the last green.

Fliss was showing how good she is playing with the British Ladies coming up next week and was -4 on the afternoon, missing a hole-in-one by an inch. There were superb wins for Tracey Atkin 5&3, Claire Howells 3&2 and Jane Mander on the 17th.

'It was a good start', said Anne, 'Kerry came in and played very well in a great performance all day.'

Tomorrow Warwickshire play Staffordshire who today beat Derbyshire by the same score 6-3.

Staffordshire were 2-1 ahead after the morning foursomes with Beth Chataway and Sue Spencer big winners by 6&4 and their other point coming from Katrina Halford and Lorna Nicholls. Their players then made an excellent start in the afternoon leading in a couple of matches by 4up before Derbyshire fought back.

'I am glad my players held on', said the Staffordshire Captain Dot Calburn as three matches went to the 18th, all of them going to Staffordshire.

The four Staffs winners were Sue Spencer 2up, Rachel Jennings 2&1 and Lorna Nicholls and Julie Brown both won on the last.
