More Junior success and news on the JOM
At the English Schools U16s Championship, at Chevin GC on Monday 17th July, three Shirley Juniors made their first appearance in this Championship - and they did very well. Thomas Guy and Jamie Carney made Top 20 on what was one of hottest days ever for golf, even up in the Derbyshire mountains! Chevin is a very good course, undulating more than most, and two rounds under 80 are the sign of some excellent golf which both Thomas and Jamie achieved.

Thomas opened with a 79. That was nine shots back from the eventual winner Hugh Dobson from Suffolk, who with a 67 in the second round was a clear winner. Jamie went two shots better with a 77 for his first round.

For the Warwickshire Schools U16s Champions Jonathan Bryan, this was a first national competition and Jonathan's handicap was significantly higher than the rest of the field after his superb efforts to win the Warks U16s at Ingon Manor had guaranteed him a place at Chevin to join the best 15s and unders in England. Jonathan started with an 85 and found the hilly course tough going in the afternoon for an 89.

Jamie added a 76 to his first round 77 and finished tied 14th.

Thomas shot the lowest round of a Warwickshire player with a 75 in the afternoon, despite the incredible heat, and was 18th overall. His round included a 'Seve' drop from a parked car on the par 3 15th. Conditions were very hard so missing the par three green resulting in Thomas's ball careering down the hill. It ended in a bush but there was a car in the way of Thomas's recovery. The car couldn't been be moved so Thomas got a still not advantageous drop in terms of the lie but hit a great recovery to keep his round going.

Both Thomas and Jamie will be able to play in the ESGA U15s for a couple more years, trying to emulate past winners such as Nick Dougherty and Kenneth Ferrie.

With all our apologies for the delays which have been both technical and hardware related, the 2006 JOM will be full operation by the end of this week, with well of 500 juniors able to vie for the title and the Birmingham Post and Mail Trophy. We will be contacting all Junior organisers to make sure they have access codes and operating instructions (which are very simple) and we will offer as much help as we can to get scores up-to-date.

Juniors have the three Boys Championships (the Boys itself and the U16s and U14s) as their 'Majors' - have you entered yet because the points available are huge just for those Championships?

There are also all the Junior Opens listed which again are big points scorers. Many entry forms are on the 'Competitions' Button entry page on the LHS of this site - check it out.
