Kirwan's hard earned fifth title
Kenilworth GC - Thursday 10th August 2006 - Centenary Boys Matchplay title - Rory Kirwan had to work very hard for his fifth major title of 2006. Firstly he took on Warwickshire Boy's Captain Chris Doughill in the semi-finals. Chris has not had the best of seasons. In this match he was back to his very best.

Rory was 3 up with just a handful of holes to play, courtesy of six birdies. Back came Doughill to fire five birdies and an eagle in the normal eighteen holes of the match and to take the game on to the 19th, the downhill par five first at Kenilworth.

Chris was on the tee first. Unfortunately he pulled his drive left, into the trees and boundary hedge. That just left Rory to play down for his par and the win.

In the second semi-final Sam, it was the battle of the Coventry junior 'stars' Ben Bernamont and Sam Dodds. Ben struck first and was two up after four. Sam pulled one back at the 8th but lost the 10th.

The uphill par four 13th is one of the key holes at Kenilworth. Ben made his first mistake of the day there and lost that to a Dodds par. He lost the par five 16th to a Dodds birdie, the next was halved so they stood on the 18th all square, Sam made his par, Ben did not so it was the third/fourth place play-off for Ben, against Chris Doughill, a match Ben won 2&1.

The final seemed all over when Rory went 3 up after thirteen holes. Back came Sam with approaches that were stiff at the 14th and then the 15th. It was now much tighter.

Both players parred the 16th and 17th so Sam played first at the 18th. He found the green, 15ft from the hole. Rory followed Sam onto the putting surface and his approach putt was conceded leaving Sam with a birdie try to take the match into extra hole. It was struck well but drifted past the hole, leaving Rory a five time champion for 2006. He still has the Centenary Warwickshire Open to try for, for a sixth cup to go on his fireplace.
