Peter McEvoy on the Amateur game without Fisher
At the Centenary Dinner, Peter McEvoy was to give a speech about his own golf in Warwickshire Championships and Teams. Peter is Chairman of GB & I Selectors so his opinions on the recent performance of Oliver Fisher in the European Tour Q School was something we wanted to ask him about. These are his thoughts and some more Warwickshire recollections -

'The trouble is they go off the top end of scale. We lost Ross McGowan as well. Oliver has the game to do well as a Professional.

'Replacing Oliver (and Ross) is going to be very difficult. The players who could be good enough are a long way from Oliver. It really does hurt.'

The Amateur vs Professional debate - could an amateur play well enough to beat Professionals when not able to commit to the same levels of practice and play? - has raged for years. In 1974, Peter created a little bit of history by becoming the first Amateur to win the Warwickshire Open title after decades of Pro dominance.

'Yes, that was very satisfying. I won in a play-off against Peter Dawson (now Secretary of the R&A). I retained it the following year. I think I only played in it once more time, trying to win three.'

Sixteen years later, in what was a swansong for Peter, the win at the County Finals at Hayling Island was one of his most satisfying times -

'We were a bit past it. People were writing us off. As far as i can recall, that was a great weekend!'
