Three Champions - planning for 2007
Ben Stafford, Andy Sullivan and Rory Kirwan each won a Centenary Championship in 2006 (three in the case of Rory) but none of the three is resting on their laurels. Just like all Warwickshire's best players, their targets are high, and each has already started preparing for this year. These are some of their thoughts on 2006 and their plans for 2007 -

'I got off to a bit of a flyer in the Amateur (-5 through 9 holes),' said Ben, 'and my confidence was high,'

When Ben made a mess of his 19th and 20th holes, he simply set himself a new target -

'I just thought about trying to get it back to level par - which I did with some good up and downs.

'They were quality players at the County Finals but it was a bit of a downer after Graham and everyone had put so much work into it. We will all be up for 2007 and right behind Gareth (Jenkins).

'I have been practising lots and working with Neil (McKewan) on strengthening my legs, having more stability to give me a bit more power. I start 2007 at the Portuguese Amateur in February.'

Open Champion Andy Sullivan has also been working with McKewan, mainly on his posture -

'I got a bit steep on it an my right knee started locking out. The plane of my swing has been good though and I am looking to get a short game like Phil Mickelson.

'I've not changed anything in the bag bar my putter. My first championship will be the Berkhamstead.'

Rory Kirwan said goodbye to Junior golf in some style - with a pair of 67s to take the Junior Championship, then some more spectacular golf to take the Boys Matchplay.

'I am going to take a couple of years off and play the Amateur circuit. The Boys Matchplay in 2005 was really important - it was my first Warwickshire title.

'When beating Andy to take the Mens Matchplay, Rory never let up -

'With Sullly, he can turn it on at any point so until that final putt went in, I never thought about being the champion.

Despite a year of great success, Rory did not lower his handicap to reflect how good he can play so he will not be able to go to the Spanish Amateur, his planned first target for 2007. He will be going to Tenerife for some warm weather and to the US where he plans to look round Tennessee University and play a bit.

'I have been working on changing my shot shape from a fade to a draw, to get a little bit more length, and a bit more of a shoulder turn - again for more length.

And what about County Finals - if Warwickshire can gte back there again?

'Hopefully we will be back and I, for one, know what to expect. It was a good standard but not unbeatable.'

So those are three players' plans for 2007. How far can they and Warwickshire go? Find out here.

A Very Happy New year to you all!
