The
two teams that made the final of the Bainbridge Shield both
made their way to the 36 hole match with some great golf. Carl
Kirby played the first two rounds with Ed Morton, as Coventry
B, and the team"s successes grew with each round with winning
margins going up and up, to 6&5 and 6&4, when David
Hayes returned from University to take Morton"s place.

From
Pype Hayes, Andy Sheard was a finalist in 1992, also at Olton,
but this year had teamed up with Glyn Grayson, recording 4 home
wins then a great 6&5 triumph away at Stratford in the semis.

The
Pype Hayes guys had been for a practice round at Olton, and
having played really par golf through their five previous wins,
were looking forward to a close match. Olton is one of the toughest
tests in the County, and despite the wet conditions was in excellent
condition, a realistic "good score" for any team was probably
around 72 or 72 against a par of 69.

The
Coventry team however, were in cracking form and with two birdies
(and just one bogey) went out in 33, one under par. Pype Hayes
had a couple of bits of bad luck and would not have wanted to
make the other mistakes which left them 6 down after that first
9. With plenty of holes left (and if last year"s final was anything
to go by, a recovery was possible) the Pype Hayes team kept
with Coventry until a bogey at 15 dropped them another hole
- they could do nothing about the fabulous finish.

|
Coventry
birdied 16, 17 & 18 to open up a 10 hole lead and to finish
the morning 18 in 67 shots, a great score under any conditions
and one which made the final an anticlimax of sorts. They ran
out 12&10 wins in early afternoon.

"No
one likes to see that" said David Hayes after the prize giving,
"A hell of a lot of people wish they had got as far as Andy
and Glyn."
|
|
"We"ve
played par golf all the way, before - its just one of those
things", was the reply from Andy Sheard.

With
the presentations made by County president Tony Redding, the
group of Pype Hayes supporters were disappointed but philosophical
whilst David Hayes and Carl Kirby were presented with the added
trophies of their medals for the County"s success in the Midland
League. It was good return from the Pro ranks for Kirby and
Hayes will go back to University looking forward to 2003.
