Torrance defends PGA Seniors
Sam Torrance has welcomed the announcement that the GBP 200,000 PGA Seniors Championship will return to Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in Suffolk from 6 - 9 September 2007. The former Ryder Cup captain produced an outstanding final round of six under par 66 to win last year's event and will draw on those happy memories as he bids to become only the third player in the 51 year history of the Championship to capture the title in three consecutive years.

Torrance commented: 'The PGA Seniors Championship is one of the most important events of the year for me. It's a flagship tournament and having won it for the past two years I'll be looking to make it three in a row.

'I enjoyed the testing course at Stoke by Nayland last year and look forward to returning there.'

Since its inception in 1957, the PGA Seniors Championship has attracted some of the finest names to have ever graced the fairways and two very special names could be added to the list this year with Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros both eligible to play.

As it stands the list of past winners already reads like a 'Who's Who' of golf and nowhere is this more evident than in the select band to have won the championship on more than one occasion; Neil Coles, Max Faulkner, Tommy Horton, Kel Nagle and Christy O'Connor.

Torrance joined that gilded group last year when he returned a 20 under par total of 268 to win by three strokes from three-time European Seniors Tour winner Luis Carbonetti of Argentina. A repeat victory this September and the Scotsman will join Coles (1985 and 1987) and O'Connor (1981 and 1983) as the only players to have won the event three times in succession.

PGA chief executive Sandy Jones said: 'We are privileged to again be hosting the Championship at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, where we know we can be sure of a warm welcome and also an excellent test of golf for the best players.

'Last year, all the competitors were full of praise for the course and many agreed the greens were among the best they had putted on throughout the Seniors Tour.'

Andy Stubbs, managing director of the European Seniors Tour, said: 'The addition of the 51st PGA Seniors Championship further strengthens an already impressive European Seniors Tour Schedule for 2007 and means there are now 18 counting events for the Order of Merit, with more to follow soon.

'Last year's tournament at The Stoke by Nayland Golf Club represented our first visit to the PGA East Region for nearly 30 years. It was an unequivocal success and we look forward to more of the same this September.'

Susanna Rendall, managing director of The Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, added: 'We are delighted that both the PGA and the top professionals who participated in the 2006 Championship are keen to return to Stoke by Nayland for a second year. This is a great credit to all our facilities and staff, and we look forward very much to working again with the PGA and welcoming everyone back in September.'

Still a family-owned business, The Stoke by Nayland Club boasts two championship courses - the Constable and Gainsborough - and is located in 300 acres of rolling hills, woodlands and lakes, in stunning 'Constable Country'. The 2007 PGA Seniors' Championship will be played over 72 holes on the Gainsborough Course.

The Club also offers a superb Hotel with state-of-the-art Spa and Leisure facilities, and has become one of the most sought-after venues in East Anglia for national and international golfing events, such as the PGA Europro Tour, as well as golf and spa breaks and society and corporate golf days.
